OK. I installed it through GOG Galaxy and it is set in English, but through the intro, there's some sort of french text-to-speech program applied through on the intro text. I wonder if there's a way to disable it.

Not only it's badly translated (I'm talking about Google translation bad), but it's so robotic and badly pronounced that it comes off as VERY distracting. And why is it in FRENCH where the game is set in English? Is it because I have a French OS?

I believe it's part of the intro, and was probably put there by Japanese speakers for whom English is their second language which puts their French, well, not in good shape.

You can disable movie playback in the configuration program before starting a new game. (In fact, playing under Linux via WINE it's actually necessary to do that.)

Alternatively, you could play as a different character.

Also, why does this topic (that was just posted on a not-so-active board and has no replies as I am writing this) have 8 pages?
Ys takes place in a fictionalized version of the real world and each location has a real-world counterpart. The location of Esteria (where Ys I, II, and Origin take place) corresponds to our France, which is why the intro is in pseudo-French.

No, it's definitely a real person.
