You can see all enemies on the map. Sometimes they're so fast that you can't avoid them, so be careful going into new areas, and save often!

Combat is based on the "bump system". Here's how it works:

You have complete control of your character. You simply run up to an enemy and touch it to attack. You and/or they will kind of bounce away (hence the "bump") and one or both of you will take damage. You can continue to attack, or you can retreat if they're too powerful. That's it in a nutshell, at least for Book I (the first half of Ys Chronicles.) Book II adds some magic into the mix.

To be at your most efficient when attacking, hit the enemies diagonally.

If anyone has problems, questions, or just wants game-playing tips on Ys Chronicles, feel free to PM me! I've played them through so many times that I should be able to help you with anything you need.

Thanks for the info, I've been wanting to try this games for a while, but I didn't wanted to get them thru steam cause yeah, I totally love gog and I've already wishlisted them here...

So now that they are here and discounted I've decided to get them, so far I've been just messing around different configurations and checking the differences between complete/chronicles so I pick the one that I like more before I start playing it.

I think that my pick is going to be the "complete" version audio/drawings because it gives me that feeling of "old school" japanese game (altho it was a hard decission cause chronicles is pretty good aswel!). I supose it just changes that, or atleast that's what I've readed in several websites.

Well, it's nice that you can pick all those options because it makes it more re-playable.

Again thanks for your post and I'll probably be poking you if I get stuck or something :P

PS: Sorry for the poor english/grammar....

I didn't even notice where you're from until you mentioned it! You "sound" like a native English-speaker.

Would you mind going into detail about what the differences are? I realized there are different music files, but I haven't been able to figure what the rest of the settings do yet.

From my undestanding and from what I've been messing around the differences are:

1- Complete is the art from the PC version of the games and Chronicles is ART art created for the ¿PSP game?. So it changes the artwork when you talk with someone, for some reason I find compelte ones better because they look more old-school 80's-90's japanese drawing while the new ones are more what you will expect from a modern anime (but that's just my opinion!).

2- Also the soundtrack (there are 3, complete, chronicles and an older version aswel), but you can change that anytime ingame and I definetly love all the versions and I even switch between them so I don't get "bored" of a particular track.

3- if you go to the config.exe in your Ys folder if you go to display mode the chronicles one is a "widescreen/zoomed-up" version while the complete is not (probably because it stays more true to the original). I enjoy the widescreened one much more for some reason... But it's almost the same.

Maybe I'm missing something but yeah, you get the idea, I don't think it changes any gameplay or history features at all.
Actually I think this is the best combat system ever made to an RPG. It is fast and entertaining. Hard to beat the strong enemies, but don't break the momentum. Superb! :D
