Hello! I downloaded the game anticipating some issues, given that's it's an older game with a smaller following. But I can't get it to start at all.

Here is the error message:
The instruction at 005926d1 referenced memory at 00000008
The memory could not be read from

Click on OK to terminate the application

My computer specs:

Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.4 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

What I have tried so far:

Usually with older games the issue is the resolution. Selecting the 640x400 compatibility option doesn't help, neither did administrator mode or removing fullscreen optimizations. I downloaded the townavi fix and replaced the files. Is there any other fix I haven't heard of? It's difficult to find information about this game online.

It doesn't help that I'm only slightly computer savvy (I can follow other people's instructions on how to fix something, for the most part). What little I can find seems to focus on optimizing the game, instead of just making it run at all.

Edit: I've now used a patch that makes the game compatible with Radeon graphics processors, available on JeffLudwig. It still crashes.

Hi!

Tja, there may be many reasons for this behaviour. From the most common ones, it could be damaged memory of your computer, damaged disk, or just a damaged game file.

The last one seems to be the easiest to fix.

Can you download the game installer again, run whatever verification steps it provides (to make sure that there were no download errors), and then install the game again?

Your operating system (you haven't said whether your operating system is Linux, Windows or Mac) shall take care for any possible errors in the memory or disk, so if your disk happened to get damaged after you have installed the game, then installing it anew shall allocate the files in other, possibly error-free areas.

It never hurts to run some diagnostics of the system, but save it for some other evening.

The game works without problems for me, so at least I can say that it is not 100% broken. It may also be somehow incompatible with something specific on your computer, but even if you contact GOG Support (what you might want to do, if you would still have these problems), they would probably tell you to reinstall the game as the first step.

P.S.: I am not sure if you actually need any external patches. I suspect that what GOG provides is already fully patched. At least I am enjoying the game without having to download or install anything else.

If it's worked for you, that's pretty encouraging. I have Windows 11 (not sure how I forgot to mention that!). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game a few times, using the inbuilt installer from GOG.

Wizards and Warriors can apparently a really finicky game to get working on newer computers. It shouldn't be a corruption on my system - I've never seen this error before, and it only shows up with this game. It's more likely that it just doesn't play well with Windows 11 for some reason. And there are other reports I was able to find of this error showing up specifically with this game.

I've contacted support, but I'm prepared to keep poking around for a solution. Reinstalling it again can't hurt anything, at least.

So it's not Windows the game doesn't like. I think the problem might literally be the fact that I'm using a laptop. It works on a PC, and if I were to guess, it's probably because a PC has separate components for it to recognize. It might not be recognizing my video card. Some games (especially older ones) run on the assumption that any computer able to run it will be like a traditional PC.

When I next get the urge to work on the problem, I'll investigate my computer's video card settings. An unexpected/unrecognized video card is so often the culprit.
