Is there any way to alt-tab or win tab out of wizards and warriors? If not, is there any way to force windowed mode?

You can force the game into windowed mode with DxWnd (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/) since the game itself does not allow it. I played the entire game in a window with DxWnd and it works fine.

You should find a configuration for Wizards&Warriors ("Wizards and Warriors.dxw") in the "export" subdirectory of the directory where you unpack DxWnd.

Used the export file, but it seems to just crash saying something about referenced memory not working.

Sorry, no i have haven't encountered this. I used DxWnd 2.04.87 running on windows 7 x64, and i might have manually changed things in the exported config, so i paste the contents of my config here - just copy&paste into an editor and save it. Make sure you adjust the game path and maybe also the window-size (1600x1200). I also set the graphics driver to D3D (not software mode) inside the game. I hope it helps:
