I've updated my patch with a slightly improved audio quality for Wizardry 6. The initial opening gates are a bit cleaner now for instance. I haven't fix the rapid ambient sounds so I'd recommend you set those to 'soft' or 'off' still.

I've also added support for Wizardry 7, which means the mechanism to enable the patch has changed from 'popfix=true' to requiring the line 'wizpopfix=6'. I've updated the instructions in the original post - the only change is to step 8.

Enjoy :-)

I've applied the Wizardry sound fixes to the Boxer.app DosBox code on Mac. If anyone is interested in it, you can send me a PM.

Edit:

For anyone who wanted to do it themselves, this is what I did.

Step 1. Download and install Xcode
Download Xcode from the App Store for free.

Step 2. Download Boxer.app source
You can download the zip here: https://github.com/alunbestor/Boxer/archive/master.zip
Unzip the archive and open the Xcode project file within. Xcode will start up.

Step 3. Add HiddenAsbestos's Wizardry sound fix to Boxer project.
The only changes you should use are those in pcspeaker.cpp and dosbox.cpp files. The other changes have no effect due to alterations on DosBox made by Boxer already.

I've copied the relevant changes required to this pastebin file: http://pastebin.com/L9Rmhrde

Add the lines marked + and remove the lines marked - in the two relevant files.

Step 4. Build Boxer.app
And hopefully it all goes smoothly.

Step 5.
Right-click your GOG.com WIzardry 6.app file and select "view package contents". Go to Contents > Resources. Drag the file Wizardry 6.boxer to your desktop.

Step 6.
Right-click Wizardry 6.boxer and select "view package contents". Edit DOSBox Prefernces.conf in TextEdit and add the line "wizpopfix=6" after pcspeaker=true.

Step 7. Running the game
Launch the Boxer.app program you just built in Xcode, and drag the Wizardry 6.boxer file into it from your desktop. It should run and the sound problem should be fixed!

And that's it. Thanks a lot to HiddenAsbestos for the fix!

No problem!

Once this issue has been fixed in Boxer.app I can upload the compiled Boxer standalone app package, which just requires the Wizardry 6.boxer package from GOG to be pasted inside of it to work.

That way it will be identical to the game downloaded from GOG, but with the Wizardry sound fix applied (and a more recent version of Boxer, too).

I actually still have the Wizardry Trilogy 2 (Wiz 5,6,7) from... 20+ years ago and was getting it up and running in dosbox. Thanks so much for the audio fix, it was driving me crazy.

I sometimes still can't believe I've managed to not lose the huge manual that came with the box.
(I love these damn games.)

Seeing as that Boxer.app bug is fixed now, I made that Boxer standalone package for those who want the Wiz6 sound fix on OSX. All that's required after downloading is to copy your "Wizardry 6.boxer" folder from the old GOG "Wizardry 6.app" into the new one (inside the "Contents/Resources" folder). You should also be able to use Boxer to make a .boxer gamebox from the original game files (if you have those) and then use that. Thanks berrrnard for your efforts!

Does anybody have a workaround for the ambient sounds playing constantly?

It's been several years since I loaded this up but I thought I had found something that fixed it in the past. Can't seem to find it now. Is there something in dosbox you can change to lower the frequency with which it plays or something?

You can use CTRL+F11 and CTRL+12 to adjust CPU cycles up and down, you can see the difference in-game and opt to set fixed cycles in dosboxWizardry6.conf. This will essentially slow down the entire game and reduce the frequency of ambient noises.

I can confirm this working with the Steam version of Wiz7 on mac, should therefore also work with the gog version, because both use boxer.

Go to the Wizardry 7 app, and show package contents. Download the package from one of the links above. Replace the MacOS folder from Wiz7 with the MacOS folder from the downloaded Wiz6 package. That fixes the sound popping when using pc speaker for sfx.
