OK. Here comes an odd question:

I thinking about getting this. I am addicted to hard core turn based, party based rpgs. Hopelessly. Even though they kick my b*** and I never reach the second dungeon/third floor/whatever.

But the only thing that really bothers me is the insane difficulty of these type of games PLUS having to complete great portions of it or having to escape to town before I can save my progress. How does saving work in this series? When can I save?

So long as you don't play on iron man mode, you can save anywhere outside of combat. I think the game even gives you a quicksave key.

Edit: Speaking from experience with Wiz8 only, that is.

You can save pretty much whenever you want. You can't save in combat, and you can't save in the middle of dialog, but you can save at any other time.

I would definitely suggest keeping multiple saves, however. It's not possible to get stuck permanently or make the game unwinnable, but it is possible to make the game harder through your actions or mistakes or omissions. When saving in 7, the game only registers the first 8 characters of your filename. Saving in 6 is also tricky because it always saves/loads in the same slot (SAVEGAME.DBS) so you'll have to make backups manually. You also can't LOAD the game in combat in 6, if you want to reload you have to either win the battle or have your whole party die, or successfully run away. Be advised.

NB: It actually IS possible to get stuck in Wiz8 in the secret Retro Dungeons in a couple of places, but only if your party is weak or can't pick locks. Always make a backup save before entering any of the three Retro Dungeons.

Oh noes. Now I have to buy it.

Regardless, thanks guys.
Apparently by starting to edit my post before it was marked the solution, but not submitting my changes until after it was marked the solution, I "un-solved" the thread.... but still got to keep the +5 rep.

How strange.
