Hi.

I just beat wizardry vi. Walked back to quequeg and got basic armor. Equipped my good weapons, and imported my party. Had a great import. Tons of potions, lots of items, etc.

Don't know where I am in wizardy vii (didnt kill the king, got on the ship with Bella) in a forest. Wander north, get killed by ratmen with vorpal blades and some sort of t'rang caster. South I get murdered by trees. One I fought a fire crow. Fireball did 40+ damage to multiple party members, killing 2. Difficulty is on normal.

Where do I go? I can't seem to win a single combat and have no idea where to go to be in a level appropriate zone. Help?
Since you obviously did a walkthrough run in W6 you might as well consult a W7 walkthrough too:

There's a section about importing your game and where you start out.

Well, this time. When I sat with my father and beat it way back when it came out, all we had were dragon magazine hints. I've beaten crusaders before in high school, but not on an import.

Also who's to say I didn't beat it and then look up the information for importing.

That said, that walk through says, if you read it: "the "best" ending starts" and then "if you traveled with the umpani" and I'm just sort of uncertain which of those is which.
It's the Umpani start, from http://www.tk421.net/wizardry/wiz7walk.shtml :

If you took the "Leave with Bela" ending you will start in location 1 on map F/G-5. North 1, West 4, South 1, West 1 and South 2 to a road. Follow the road East, south and west to UKPYR. A guard will ask if you want to be a recruit - the answer is yes. Using the UKPYR map, travel easterly, then south to 1 and exit. GOOD LUCK - the monsters here are tough. Follow the road to MUNKHARAMA. Using the MUNKHARAMA map go north to location 1 and exit. Follow the road to New City. Using the NEW CITY map, go to location 1 and exit. You are now with the rest of us, on map B-5, at location 6. Go west, then south to 4 to find a treasure chest.
PS: In order to get your ending you either have to be incredibly stupid or have external information to make you drop a quest item long before the end of the game.

Ok, Again, I sat and watched my father play this to completion when I was 13. So I'd seen it all before, beaten with slaying Bane, and then taking the pen, robot, whatnot. I did use a walkthrough this time, because I'm an adult who doesn't have another 200 hours to do it all on his own.

This is ok!

What's more, is that in this playthough, I noticed that there's a bunch of evidence that paints the queen as a liar. It isn't inconceivable that one might toss away the cross that she gives you after you figure out about her dalliance with the priest.

Also, I am very curious as to why the ending where Bela is slain, and the ship is taken is referred to as the "Best" ending. Why is that ending best? What is worse about riding with Bela?

Any lore ideas?

It's the ending which required the most skill from you. You had to find the hidden door and win the hard fight afterwards (also getting items).
If you ride with Bela you skipped the epic final (rendering most of the information gathering how to win it pointless).

The intro you get when taking the ship yourself is also the only intro which fits to the Wizardry 7 story, the game is called "Crusaders of the Dark Savant".
