wiz 7 is known as hard, and this is easily worked around if you...LEVEL UP! you gotta grind to get past those tough baddies!
You mean fighting armies of enemies every few steps through normal play is not enough for you?
FYI the opposite is often true for wizardry 8;

In 8 you build up your skills from using them and if you level up too quickly then you can find yourself facing appropriately levelled monsters which you don’t have the [insert one] Bow, sword, magic realm etc, skills to fight effectively… this is most noticeable on the first road just outside because of how fast the early 10 levels build up on the pure classes so it's worth while to stop and take time to smell the roses.
Or, in 8... not click on the "level up" button until you reach Arnika. 7 levels you up automatically (though I've only noticed it does that after combat).

I never had any problems with the road to Arnika with my level 6 characters. Just remember to save powders and other magical items you pick up in the monastery, and make tactical use of the terrain. You can't sneak past groups of enemies, but you can position your party in one of many corners/nooks along the way and funnel enemies one by one towards you.
The main problem with not leveling up at all (in 8) is that you're liable to run into the wraparound effect with the creature leveling system. It's better to level up to 5 (which IIRC is the lowest level of the range for the Arnika Road area) and stop there until you have some better gear/skillups.

Indeed, that's a very nice tactic. Certainly enough of them on that road to make it effective, too.

lol. actually fighting entire armies of enemys every step in my humble opinion, is how every game should be. in fact, they should make a game where you just enter into an arena and fight non stop until your level 20000, and then you win.

Let me guess...you were raised on Mortal Kombat & Nintendo.
I'm having a problem with this also - in my case it's not one of "difficulty" per se, but rather that I'm getting foes beyond the correct level. I've played this a number of times over the years, and it's never been like this. There was always a certain type of creatures that you'd get depending on where you were and the level the characters were.
Now, I'm getting EVERYTHING. I just transferred in the party from Wiz 6, and I go 6 steps and hit NASTY stuff. I mean, high level foes. I've even seen rocket girls, which normally aren't encountered until late in the game.
Wassup?

Wiz 7 is area scaled, and some areas are much harder than others. Try an easier area.
New City and most of the surrounding area is quite easy.
Old City is too tough for new characters.
The road to Orkogre Castle and the Castle itself is relatively easy. So is Munkharama.
But overall Wiz is quite difficult in the beginning.
