larkinflight: Hello,
If you’d like to run DOS Wing Commander at the correct speed without any issues, try the Alltinker mod.
It fixed Wing Commander for me!
https://alltinker.itch.io/wcat Kudos to the creator — please support them if you can.
The mod includes its own control panel, styled accurately to the Wing Commander 1 era!
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. This is a real game changer for Wing Commander 1 fans—pun intended.
This patch finally addresses the speed issues that have long made WC1 frustrating to play on anything faster than a 386. It makes all the old DOSBox tweaking guides unnecessary—the game now runs the way it was meant to. I tested it on real hardware, and it worked flawlessly on my Pentium 133 MHz. It's a huge improvement in both accuracy and playability.
The launcher is a great addition, giving WC1 the proper settings menu it always needed. You no longer have to dig through confusing config files just to change your sound or input options. Everything is laid out cleanly and is easy to use. The built-in save editor is a thoughtful bonus, offering even more convenience.
I’ve been hoping for a solution like this for a long time, and I’m really impressed by how well it’s been done. AllTinker deserves a lot of credit for putting together such a polished and well-thought-out package. It’s the best way to experience the original Wing Commander today.
