I talked to the bartender and he said he would be on the lookout for a ship.

After that, I can't talk to him again.

Do I go ahead an buy a ship? Do I look around on the news and stuff?

Also, how do you land on planets?

This game is bad about throwing you into it without explaining anything.

I was lost too at the start. You have to read the game manuals, specifically the one labeled 'Your Guide to the Universe' gives you the exact actions you need to take to get started.
