So i did the human mission right after alterac and before blackrock spire where you have to kill all shipyards and refineries.. i think it was XII ? Anyway besides the initial landing party of two orcs i think there was one more with 4 and that was IT

There was NOTHING else the AI did except mine gold the entire match.

Now granted i mighty confused the ai as i landed RIGHT next to its main base and mined its natural expansion in that map.... but it never researched ONE upgrade ( could see by unit levels ) or made any units... the only thing it made was peons that i kept killing AFTER it had mined its 90k+ mine to depletion, no ships, or troops made, no zepplins, no buildings, no nothing.

Im going to set up my windows 95 pc again and see if it was truly that bad... because i remember that was one of the levels I was fighting for my life on back when i was a kid... and i highly doubt 2 orc grunts gave me that much trouble lol

The only thing i can think of was that the transport / troop ai got mind fucked when i started building next to his base, but NOT IN IT or attacking it, and it didn't know how to proceed.

Yes ai in mission 12 is broken, someone who wrote AI for this mission want make comupter to make ogres but orc havent got mound, so it stuck
I think I remember that one. Is yellow the main enemy? Because they harassed me with ogres, trolls, and ships most of the game.
So has there been any confirmation on which version is better in terms of AI?

I have both the gog.com version and both discs of both vanilla war 2 and btdp ready to go on a windows 95 machine.... but i like control groups and stuff like that.

So is there a better version to play for AI sake?

I now know that saving and loading during a mission is bad and you should save at the END of the PREVIOUS mission as to be less likely to fuck up the AI on the mission.
There is no big chose of versions. GOG is based on 2.0 CD (2.0 main mpq file +2.02 patch mpq) version (there is 2.01(A) CD version for both US and EU, it have 2.01 main mpq, but since 2.02 update mpq it not a big difference as result). Some files are missing - from Support folder. Extracted unit speech audio folder for no reason (with included exe tool). technically it is identical to CD. Enhanced too.

(identical in CRC, so in Support folder it refer to Blizzard support and regional UK support for UK\etc, while some else EU discs change main support html file refer it to local support company and list US Blizzard as alternative regional).
Except minor changes GOG is identical to it.

Probably Apple Mac version on that disc is differ from Windows.

If there is any version better in AI\anything than 2.02\2.02 GOG - original DOS version of Wc2 with some hotfix patch (unlikely to find) or maybe even strictly 1.0. As usual for games, most noticeable changes happen after addon installed into the game and not all of them documented (as well as usually also for any post-1.0 update not all changes listed for many games). Ofc Bnet edition is also 'noticeable' changed and obviously - no complete changes for tech staff with that port.

So maybe DOS+DOS-addon with or without older addon (latest) patch (not sure) as middle version of vanilla-1.0 and 2.02. But if you not OK with DOS version... GOG is only what you have.

Or maybe Stratagus+Wargus2. With own pros and cons. It base on and require DOS version - as result you get DOS balance with QoL of Win version.

There is also Sega Saturn version, but usually difficulty reduced on consoles RTS games. This version is for unique features for Blizzard RTS before StarCraft 2 (didnt appear not in later Bnet, not in Wc3 game (proper build queue, even more units possible to group)).

First huge engine-AI-etc differences come - as always for games - with Expansion. So maybe there is a differences in AI, and that not something of your mind-memory. Try original DOS version to compare, probably better without patches (or some not latest one, if you can find it (unlikely)).

But probably Bnet edition really bring more to that. Maybe it was based on Sega Saturn difficulty-AI? Console version in general are better - Bnet edition do not use many features there (including just cosmetics - improved loading screen map similar to Warcraft3). But still it possible that it is based on console AI.

For another example of same backporting - Half-Life 1\2 and their engines. After PS2 port changes to engine was backported to PC, downgraded it (even if you didnt install HL HDP pack). Same huge downgrade happened for HL2 (not after Xbox, but after XB360\PS3 ports). Although at first it didnt fully based on consoles and not bring achievements to base HL2 game (they added later).
So Bnet Edition probably even not have any features of console version still can be backported version, released after it. Also, that can be (or not, 50/50) true only for PC-Win version and not for PC-Mac.
