When I save my game, I cannot overwrite previous saves. It gives me the warning about overwriting saved games, and I click OK and give it a name, but when I go back to the loading screen, the previous save has not been overwritten and my progress has been lost. This applies to normal save slots and the autosave.

This problem may be even more bizarre now that I've gotten to the end of the Bonn Mines. The level is in the same state I left it when I had played through it before my progress was lost, and when I get to Ahzra's chamber, her voice is present in the cutscene but she does not appear nor does the treasure around her throne. I can't get out of Bonn Mines the way I'm supposed to because I technically haven't killed Ahzra in this save, and my quest log still requires me to cleanse the Bonn Mines.

Sounds like a permissions issue. Are you using Vista - Win7?

I am, I'm on Windows 7 64bit.
Okay, I've just started a new game, and there are no monsters in the Bonn Mines. Something has gone horribly wrong.

I would uninstall the game and reinstall it but do so with admin permission. Just right click the games exe after uninstalling it and choose run as administrator. Then I would save it to a folder other then program files as this can also cause problems something like C:\games. After its installed you may also want to run it as admin as well, you can get it so it does this each time you play by right clicking the games shortcut and choosing properties. Then go to the compatibility tab and tick run as admin.
I'm on Win 7 x64 and I had to set compatibility to WinXP SP2 with "run as admin" to get it to run correctly. Although the game runs great now I have the same problem in regards to save games - they won't overwrite old ones but I can create proper new ones.
It's possible just to hand delete some saves when they start to fill up but a fix would be nice. Once I got the game running I cracked-out playing it and I can't bring myself to keep troubleshooting it. :)

The more I read these issues, the more glad I am I stuck with XP! I will only upgrade my PC when every game I want needs Windows 7, etc. But given that all games in 2010 will be XP compatible, despite Vista being, until recently, he newest OS, shows me that even when Windows 7 is pre-installed on all new PC's, I still think my XP will be supported! Quite simply, he number of people still with XP is enormous and i'm very grateful! it amkes playing games like this so much easier! :)
Sorry to hear of all your grief though guys!
I'm having the same problem as emnii, my old save games won't overwrite. I tried changing to XP compatibility mode and running as admin but when I get to the main menu and try to load my game the game doesn't find my saves and I get a blank list!
However when I turn off run as admin they are back... Very strange.
I am able to overwrite succesfully with run as admin turned on though so will start a new game with this active as I wasn't very far into the game.
Mine behaves just like it has "read" and "write" and no "modify" permissions when writing save games. Different compatibility settings coupled with "run as admin" doesn't change it. For example, my current autosave is the first original one from when the game dumps you into the Convent after the opening cinematic even though I have 3hrs or so of game time.
Since I can create new ones fine I'm still just hand deleting when they get full. I like to save games constantly and then archive the saves for future reference so it isn't too much of an inconvenience for me.

I've had no problems with the saves at all. Just did a quick test run saving here and there and my autosave was updating fine as was copying over old saves.
I run Win7 x64 as well but haven't used any compatibility or admin rights when running the game.
I have the same problem, the first save works fine, but as soon as i try to save again on the same slots it doesn't actually save.
Anyone got an idea o how to fix this?
I'm running Vista
I have exactly the same problem as reported by emnii's first post. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.
I have tried the following, none of which make any visible difference:
* Reinstall entire game under "My Documents\Games" to sidestep virtualization.
* Run game as Administrator (via right-click menu).
* Change game shortcut to run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.
* Specifically given "Everyone" Full Permissions to savegames folder and all subfolders by inheritance.

I think enough of us are experiencing this problem. I've submitted an official support request.

All right! I found a solution! It also fixes the "Leaving for Vienna" crash. :)
1. Locate the SaveGames folder. If you installed in the default location, this should be under C:\Users\YOU\AppData\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption\SaveGames.
2. Right click SaveGames folder, properties, advanced
3. Check "Allow this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"
4. OK.
5. OK again.
6. Answer that you want this to apply to all subfolders and once more with the OK.

I can confirm this works for me - but my save game folder is in the game's install folder. No matter the location of the folder, the "Allow this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" setting in the "advanced attributes" section of the "SaveGames" folder properties will do the trick. Thanks for the info!

Edit:
Just for clarification, my GOG version saves were at the install location:
"\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption\SaveGames"
I also added screenshots of how to do it to help make it easier for others.
