Get this, then grab the unofficial patch (6.7 at the time of this writing) to fix a slew of bugs and optionally add some extra content the devs hadn't finished before the game's original release. It's amazing how long the community has supported this game and modded it, but if you give it a try you'll get an idea of why they have.
I docked a star for the bugs in the officially patched version of the game. In my eyes, the unofficial patch adds the fifth star.
On the game itself, the pluses:
- Player choices affect quest outcomes and ending
- Several "clan" options
- RPG elements and clan choices support decent range of play styles
- Good replayability
- Good story
- Satisfying melee combat
Minuses:
- Buggy without unofficial patch
- Ranged combat feels weak and clumsy
- RPG elements not very balanced (some abilities are much more powerful than others)
- While most quests can be completed with more than one approach, some story junctures require a character be at least moderately competent in combat (so a purely social character is difficult at best)
Wrong game, your thinking of Vampire: Bloodlines (which is fantastic with the community patches.) This is Vampire: Redeption, an older and less good (but still enjoyable) game based on Vampire: the Masquerade.
yeah unfortunately as far as i know Redemption doesnt have unofficial patches, only Bloodlines does.

The GOG release is patched to the 1.1 official - There is a 1.2 unofficial

Have you tested applying this to GOG's version? I'm not sure this will work.
No I haven't. I can only see that its on file planet and I do not have an account or want their downloader on my machine. If someone finds it elsewhere let me know and I will test it.

Any idea if this unofficial patch is really needed? Also, what are you meant to be installing? The installers says to visit Dark Crypt for important instructions before installing but that website no longer exists.
I dont think the unofficial patch is needed. When I played the original version, it was perfect. You even had gadgets to make your own story (if you saw GOG's youtube video about this game, you'll see that used several times... well in case you know what to watch for). So, I'm totally sure that this whole topic is directed towards Bloodlines.

Don't EVER use that thing if you intend to play a singleplayer mission. Actually don't use it ever period, it's only going to cause you to have to reinstall.
