As far as I know it works just like an old retail key. Just contact gog support and they will provide you with a unquie fresh key for online play.
I could log in just fine to a random game after installing. Didn't have to even think about a CD key, (UT2004, right?)

I wonder what would happen if someone else with the generic installer also tried to be online at the same time?

Either way, you get a key with your purchase and it's probably a good idea to go ahead and request it, just in case you run into an issue.

If I'm correct, UT04 at least displays it on the options screen. That might be something different though...
