I am in the dungeon by the Shrine of the Codex after getting Hook's key in Buccaneers Den.

I can't get past the steel door shown in the attached screenshot. After trying all the usual secret door searches, I looked up a walkthrough video on this part of the dungeon and it shows this as a sliding door paired with the door that is behind me (lowered) in the screenshot.

The door isn't sliding for me.

I searched for any reports of a similar problem and came across this bug logged on Ultima Codex.

"Another bug with the carpet appears when flying over the Isle of the Avatar. Unlike other sliding doors, one in the dungeon below that island closes even if flying over the mountains under which it is. This makes the final dungeon un-winnable."

I canvased the entire Isle of the Avatar on the magic carpet awhile ago and I have no saves before doing that.

Does the problem I am having sound like it is caused by this bug?

If so, is there any way to solve the problem through cheating, hex editing, throwing things at the computer, etc.? I am playing the GOG version with no patches.

Thanks much for any advice anyone has.

you need Hack Mover, which is available in the F2 menu when cheats are enabled.

some discussion of how to enable cheats here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/ultima_series/enabling_ultima_7_f2_console_hack

or, with my UltimaHacks patch you can simply press Alt+\ at any time in-game to toggle cheats.

Thanks!

I tried installing your UltimaHack patch and am running into trouble.

Here are the steps I took:

0) close DosBox and GOG Galaxy

1) open Hack Applier at https://johnglassmyer.github.io/UltimaHacks/

2) select U7.EXE on my computer and select u7bg.hack

3) click apply on the Hack Applier screen, then download u7bg.hack-U7.EXE

(a screenshot of the Hack applier screen is attached)

4) rename u7bg.hack-U7.EXE to U7.EXE

5) After making a backup on the entire Ultima 7 folder, delete old U7.exe file from Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Ultima 7

6) copy the new U7.exe to Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Ultima 7

7) launch Ultima 7 via GOG Galaxy, and journey onward

I tried pressing ALT + \ and then F2 and nothing happened.

I tried pressing SHIFT+1 to open the backpack of character1 and nothing happened.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks for your help!

P.S.

I verified my GOG version of U7BG is 3.4. I'm running Windows 10

Note that Alt+\ is Alt+Backslash, and it would cause text saying "Cheats enabled" to pop up over the Avatar if it worked.

Could it be that you copied the original executable by mistake, or copied the patched executable to the wrong location?

If you press v in-game, you will get a popup showing the version of the game. Could you please attach a screenshot of what that shows?
Slightly off-topic, but don’t forget to do the Forge of Virtue content before completing the game, if you haven’t already completed the challenges of the Isle of Fire.

Thanks for the brainstorming.

Understood on Alt+backslash. I know there can be foward-backslash confusion so to clarify I am holding the ALT key and then pressing the same key as I would after CD in dos to change to the root directory. I am not typing the plus sign.

I don't see any text pop-up over the avatar's head.

When I press F2 I don't see anything unusual on the screen, and my understanding is that displays a menu of some sort.

I also pressed SHIFT+1 because I'm not 100% sure what to expect when pressing F2, figuring if the cheats were enabling silently for some reason, there is no way I could misunderstand a backpack being opened, and that didn't do anything either.

"Could it be that you copied the original executable by mistake, or copied the patched executable to the wrong location?"

Good question, it's the one I'd ask!

I think this is highly unlikely.

I did the entire process twice and each time I deleted the original U7.EXE to make sure it was gone and couldn't get mixed up somehow. Then I copied the patched file from my downloads folder.

As to the location, I copied the patched file to C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Ultima 7. This is the folder used in the Ultima 7 shortcut GOG put on my desktop. If i delete U7.EXE from this folder and don't replace it, and launch the Ultima 7 shortcut, the application window closes when I Journey Onward, so that seems to confirm it's the correct folder.

"If you press v in-game, you will get a popup showing the version of the game. Could you please attach a screenshot of what that shows?"

Sure, it's attached.

Thanks for your help!

Do you work with a regular US-ANSI layout with the backslash over the enter key? Just making sure, because on ISO layout this keypress combination does NOT work (which is why I altered it for translated versions of the hacks)

I am not that familiar with keyboard layout conventions, but I think the answer is yes. I live in the United States, I have a Logitech keyboard. There is nothing unusual about it that I am aware of.

UPDATE: I googled the definition and I am definitely using a US-ANSI keyboard.

Ok, thanks....since my screenshot of the version does not have the text about Ultima hacks, that seems to indicate the hack isn't installed and the issue has nothing to do with what keys I'm pressing.

I seem to be hitting some kind of corner case here. Would you be open to taking a look at my U7.EXE file?

The original U7.EXE is around 689kB and the UltimaHacks patched U7.EXE is around 708kB. What size is the one you're running?

Thanks for the size info, I should have asked that.

Using the size info I was able to sort everything out. Apparently when I deleted the original U7.EXE and copied in the new U7.EXE I was doing it in the backup Ultima7 folder I made (shoulda called it U7_BAK) and when I did the test to verify the folder by deleting U7.EXE and clicking the desktop shortcut to U7 to observe whether the game crashed, I did it in the correct folder. Doh!

So, all good, I see the cheat menu and can move doors.

Thanks much for your help and sorry for the human error hassle.
