Alternatively, don't bother with companions; they're not as important in the Ultima series as you'd think, and they tend to bog down the game. (Ultima 5 is the only one where going solo actually makes things difficult, and even that is manageable with high stats; Ultima 4 you only need a full party because of an arbitrary requirement, and it's still easiest to leave some of your characters dead.)
