first time playing and i love the graphics and exploration. however, out of 3 hrs of playing a good third of that has been learning how to feed party members, dealing with screen being covered with pop up inventory bags and then trying to find the whining git thats hungry, managing food inventory and searching for more food. If i hear IoIo say hes hungry again im going to rip his intestines out and feed it to him. its not fun at all

so.....for the love of gaming sanity, are there any mods that deal with hunger, either making it easier to deal with or eliminating it all together?
Never heard of a mod like that. But some food keeps the characters filled for a longer time. Silverleaf Bread, I believe is the winner here.
Actually, Silverleaf is the worst for keeping the party fed. Cheap meat from the Britain Farmers Market is about as good as it gets. Serpent Isle has a key, F, to simple Feed a party member until full as long as the food holds out, but the only way to get that functionality in U7 is to use Exult, a fan-created engine which makes a number of improvements to both U7 and SI.
So far as I know, there's no mod which stops hunger entirely.

You must also have a bug that occurs on modern systems – the game appears to perform as expected, but the abnormally fast processor cycle interferes with many of the mechanics "below the hood", one of them being the period before the next hunger event. This results in your party members being seemingly insatiable.

Really? I stand corrected then. I could have sworn Silverleaf bread was the best one.
thanks for the replies and suggestions. I have installed exult and am currently figuring out all the tweaking, it does simplify food by enabling a quick key to feed them at least and meat does seem to cut down the requests :)

It's even worse than you think. Silverleaf is very expensive and actually doesn't fill you at all. Its food value is 0, which is only shared with alcoholic drinks.

I don't think any mods exist for this. The easiest thing you can do is hunt deer. They drop 5 legs each (don't ask me why they have 5 legs) and they fill you up nicely. Just kill them when you see them and have one of your party members carry all the food.

Meats are the easiest food to get and fill you the most. Green cheese and dried fish are even better, but they're a rarity. (Dried fish only exists in Serpent Isle.) They fill you for 31 points (which is max).
Ham (wild boars), fowl (chickens), mutton (sheep) and ribs (horses) fill for 24 points.
Deer meat and cow meat fill for 16 points. An extra bonus here is that these creatures also drop 5 food items.

Other food is really not worth it. With sausage at 12 and cheese wheels at 9 the rest is even lower, meaning you'd be carrying a lot of food around to fill your stomach.

omg i just started playing and he's already driving me nuts. I have a really serious stupid question about hunger and feeding. I can't figure out how to do it at all, they are screeching for food and Im not sure how i feed them? i tried double clicking or left clicking the bread and all sorts of other clicking and dragging combos and I'm not sure how this works. Any advice is much appreciated!

Hi,
just open the inventory, double-click on the food piece and (with the now cross-like mouse symbol) left click outside of the inventory on the character you want to feed. ;)

Is this virtuous?

I been a fan of Ultima since the series started back in the 80s. Played every one of them and solved every one of them except for Ultima IX because I just don't like doom clones and lost interest. Though this post is old, the issue about food has an easy fix. This game has a special feature that has all but been forgotten. Having hunger or any issues or just want to have fun out of its normal perimeters, all you need to do is type this special phrase and it unlocks a hidden part of the game.

Talk to Iolo and hit enter each time you type these words. Spam, Spam, Spam, Humbug. I am so surprised everyone has forgotten this. It was a card that came in my game years ago. Have fun =)

Oh, in case your wondering, just about every ultima game has this feature built in. You just got to know how to turn it on =) Message me if you want to know the others =)

That's Ultima 6, not 7.

Ultima 6 doesn't have the same hunger issue that 7 does. It's a shame how each game in the series (except the first, of course) manages to have one significant flaw that the previous game in the series did not.

Actually, sorry, your right. Ultima 7 has an immense system of Easter eggs including ways to shut the characters up from annoying you for food every few minutes. One of my favorite things to do with Ultima VII was to edit the save file and change the NPC's slot number to contain Lord British. Having him in your party made things... interesting. If you want me to list the tricks, just let me know. Also, I'm pretty new to posting here so if there is a way to do spoilers, giving the reader a choice whether to read the information or not please let me know how to do it.

still a good tip, will use it in future, thanks!
Eating is a nice feature of the game.
Imo adding a lot of atmosphere and survival aspect, which many games later lacked or neglected (Ultima 8 & 9 for example have food, but you can survive without eating. It just adds healthpoints).

A good example for use of food today is in Minecraft.

I don't know of any mod for now and never investigated, since it is part of the game and easy to manage.

Just have one of your followers have a backpack full of food.

Also use the Key F to (F)eed each individual Follower. ;-)

You can lit. get infinite food, baking bread...
You need a Sack of Flour, a full water Bucket and an oven (bakery or kitchen).
1. Double-click Sack of Flour and place the Flour on a table (or the ground ;P)
2. Double-click your (full) water-bucket and add water to the flour you placed somewhere (I recal it was possible to place the flour directly onto the oven and get a bread after sometime... not sure anymore)
3. Move the dough into/onto the oven (or the mantelpiece)
4. Mhmmmm food

It's really easy to bake a full sreen of bread and also sell it for coins to the Baker.

http://wiki.ultimacodex.com/wiki/Food_Values_in_Ultima_VII

There is also a Create Food spell, using reagents to create food...

Cheers and have fun.
