Started Ultima 2, ended up saving in a hopeless situation. Went to start over, and couldn't create another character ("Not a blank Player Disk") or see any way of deleting the old one. Short of trashing everything and reinstalling, is there any way of handling this?

Yes! Alright. It's the same thing for Ultima I: First Age of Darkness. It's kind of weird to find, but it's doable. What you need to do is go to
C:/Users/username/AppData/Local
and then look for Virtual Store. Go in there, Program Files, and find Ultima Trilogy in GOG.com. Then Ultima2, and delete the PLAYER file.
Once you've done this, you can start a new game. :3
I had a hard time figuring this out too. There was one other forum post that explained it, but it lead me in the wrong direction. I really hope I could help!
Also, reinstalling does nothing, even if you say to erase all data. Because it's buried in Virtual Store, it doesn't get erased during uninstallation.

Thanks, that did it (never had to do anything like that for Ultima 1, since it lets you have multiple saves).

No problem. And yeah, it's just in case you run out of save slots for multiple people playing or what-have-you, know that the saves are there. :3 I'm glad I could help!
Note that the Virtual Store is used by Windows 7 UAC for legacy programs that write to Program Files. Rather than giving you an annoying UAC prompt the files get written into the Virtual Store and are treated as being in the original location under Program Files when that app goes to read the data again. So remember that save files for pretty much all your GOG games will wind up there if you've got the UAC enabled.

Well, that explains why people keep referencing this "Virtual Store" folder that I've never seen on my system.
You can also delete the "FIGHTER" file content, in the game folder, using a text editor like Notes. Goodbye
