I just finished Ultima 2 and damn!!!! There was a lot of grinding for gold. When I started the game I thought it was unplayable because I was killed before i could get anything done.

Eventually I researched the game and learned you pretty much HAVE to steal food at the beginning to get anywhere.

I'm hoping to avoid any headaches at the game start.

Like others have stated the best and easiest way to start this game is decidededly unheroic. Take your party to the city of Yew and murderer everything in there. That's right hero of Britannia genocide is the solution.

Let the bloodbath begin!

Don't give any intelligence or wisdom to characters who don't need it. These attributes are only for spellcasting and have no secondary effects like better magic resitance or anything. Intelligence is only for wizard spells and wisdom only for cleric spells.
