Do you have the right ROMs?

I'm pretty sure they're the correct ones. Is there a definitive way to make sure (like, filesize or something)?

PetrusOctavianus: I finally got the Roland sound effects to work properly, by following the instructions in this post:
http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/might-and-magic-7-9.65635/page-2#post-1841646

By using regular DosBox and not the SVN version, and using the CM32L Roms instead of the MT32 Roms, it finally worked.
I've tried both rom sets and I'm still getting piano footsteps.

edit: I just followed the steps for installing Munt instead. Oh man that sounds sweet!

Do you have Windows 7 64-bit? If so, where did the installer but the .inf file? When I used it, it put the mt32emu.dll file in the windows folder, but the mt32emu.inf file doesn't seem to exist; I did a search of the entire system and it came up blank.

No, I was following the directions for 32-bit.

I wish I knew.
I tried to install Munt on my Windows XP system. I followed the instructions that came with it, but the emulated MT-32 is not showing up in my MIDI devices list. However, the Hardware tab does show MT-32 Synth Emulator. When I check the Properties on that, Windows tells me "No drivers are installed for this device." My actual sound card is Sound Blaster Live! 5.1. One thing which might be interfering with things is that I had the earlier Roland emulator installed while setting up Munt at first.

I am unable to try the setup program from VOGONS since it informs me that my IP is banned from the forum and to contact an administrator. However, since that message shows up for every page on the forums, I cannot dig up the contact information of any administrator. Sigh.

edit: I found another download location for MuntSetup.exe at Sierrahelp. However, I get the "unable to write registry value required" error while trying to set it up. I noticed there are instructions for how to fix this on Windows 7, but following that on XP gets me nowhere.

Wow, the difference between the GoG standard sound settings and MT-32 emulation are huge, thanks for the advice!
This needs to be fixed, and other dosbox games need to be fixed as well in regards to sound and music. I shouldn't have to go to youtube to check what a game's intro is supposed to sound like, then have to check the forum to see what hoops I have to go through to get there.

If I would have gotten a better experience just pirating the game and running the installer from dosbox directly then that defeats the whole point of gog.com
In Ultima Underworld 2 the graphics are more pixelated than in first one, but the setting are the same, they are overlay and normal2x scaling. What settings do you recommend?

Hey guys, just bought UUW and I'm getting the piano walking sounds. Sifting through this convoluted discussion for a definitive fix is giving me a headache!

Can someone please just post a working step by step guide on the first page on how to fix the piano sounds for UUW?
Going through 4 pages I have seen so many solutions, but I cannot be bothered with trial and error, this would be a big help to other people in the future too! Cheers.

For UW1:

1. Go to C:\GOG Games\Ultima Underworld 1 and 2\Ultima Underworld 1\UNDEROM1\DATA
2. Edit uw.cfg (with Notepad or the like)
3. Replace 6 -1 -1 -1 sound with 2 7 220 1 sound
4. Save your changes.

For UW2:
1. Go to C:\GOG Games\Ultima Underworld 1 and 2\Ultima Underworld 2\UNDEROM2\DATA
2. Edit uw.cfg (with Notepad or the like)
3. Replace 5 -1 -1 -1 sound with 2 7 220 1 sound
4. Save your changes.

If you changed the installation folder then the paths above will differ but it will still be under the respective Ultima Underworld 1\UNDEROM1\DATA folders etc.

Thanks man! Do you also recommend using the MIDI sound patch?

I haven't really tried it myself but you can easily install and uninstall it using Ultima Patcher (this can apparently also be used to do the piano fix).
Did anybody get the music to play in Ultima IV?

There is a patch for the orginal PC version, but i am not sure if and how it can be made to work with the DOSBOX version too.

Any? :)

EDIT: Found the Ultima Patcher - it works now! :)
