TheKid965: Because if you let this guy in your party, he'll make off with a VERY plot-critical item that will be very difficult, or at least time-consuming, to get back. To the point where most walkthroughs I've read suggest, or at least imply, that you'd almost be wiser to simply start a new game if that happens.
Eh? I'm pretty sure he just attacks your party the next time you find yourself in combat if you have that certain item. I've never heard of him running off with the item. If he can run off with the item then where does he go? How do you get it back?

I´ve only ever heard of him attack you, either. Maybe he makes off with said item if he wins?
For me it´s been extremely frustrating trying to get to the white stone in the way it´s supposed to happen - the Wind Control is just to unreliable. However I found it´s quite easy to use Blink to teleport yourself to the target area: walk to a spot as close directly south of the target spot as you can, use (P)eer to see how many squares to the north the target spot is, the Blink south, walk north the requisite number of squares, and Blink north from there. Works like a charm.

Try a slower game speed, perhaps? I admittedly haven't done so on a modern computer, but on the Commodore 64, it wasn't too bad. Wind Change is pretty solid as far as magic goes, and if you prepare the spell and wait at the "which direction" prompt, the game won't pass turns on you continually, and you only have to press one key to change your heading instead of four.
But yes, Peering and Blinking does work; you have to bring in outside knowledge (i.e. you have to know roughly where the Stone is, first, which they don't tell you in-game - only a general location) - unless you fly over first, I guess. Or routinely peer at everything.

It looks like said traitor only steals a certain item in Ultima V: Lazarus, rather than in the original game. However, under questioning, the reason that the traitor is hanging around British's room is that he's looking for that item.

*** edit ***

After as exhaustive a search as I'd ever like to do, I found one - and only one - source online that suggested that that certain item might be stolen by that certain traitor in the original game. So maybe it can happen.

Ultima V:
In Xen Mani - ginseng, garlic and Mandrake (creates food)

Glass sword - one use but one hit kill - can be found by climbing in the serpent spine mountain range.
The traitorous NPC can and will make off with the item in the original game.
