I just watched this review like 2 days ago. All i remember from the review is that the bad guys are the "Fellowship" and they are trying to summon some kind of monster. And they have also disrupted the magic in the world or something like that. Are the bad guys a big secret, or are there more secrets and mysterious in the game? I'm so mad i had this game spoiled for me, it looks fantastic :(.

Is there more to the story then the bad guys and what they're trying to do? I hope not :/. Thanks for anyone who takes the time to comment :).

Edit: Obviously i'm talking about Ultima 7. And yes, i know i'm like 21 years late to playing it haha, but i still wish it wasn't spoiled for me.

You should get the sense something is ... wrong with the Fellowship even before leaving Trinsic just by talking to the local members. Your first visit to Lord British will also update you on the current problems afflicting Britannia. The story of the game is solving each of these problems, then finding and dealing with who is responsible. The heart of the game is interacting with all the people.

By all means play the game. You just might find it *much* larger than that review made you think.
It is pretty obvious that the Fellowship is evil, as the first thing you find in Britania is a man sacrificed in a ritual and the only know new religion is the Fellowship. And they a bit weird an cult-like before you start diggung deeper.
And the Guardian is no surprise too, he announces his presence loudly in the intro (fully voiced!). Which is pretty much the reason the Avatar goes back to Britania and stops the Guardian, so that was a stupid move of him.
By all means, you should play this game, I would not say that Spoony spoiled the story too much, even more if you don't remember anything about the story other than Fellowhip=evil

It's not much of a spoiler. I wouldn't let that force you into passing up the game. Like the others have said, there's a lot of gameplay, world, and interesting characters to experience.
Thanks a lot guys :). I will definitely be buying this game. It looks really, really fun. I've heard it has one of the best game worlds ever (people to talk to that have schedules, etc.), so i can't wait to play it :). Thanks again!
No problem, glad we could be of help.
Just a few beginners tips:
1) Read the manual
2) You should keep some notes of important sounding information and quests. Unfortunately it has no build in quest log, I'm not sure if any game before had one.
3) You will probably want to run the game in Exult. It is a fan re-implementation of the engine and has a better performance with the game than DOSBox for most people. And it has some (optional) improvements mostly from Serpent Isle. And small bug fixes.

Thanks, i'll try Exult. Also i look forward to keeping track of quests myself. I've never had to in a game before and it sounds like fun. Although i'm afraid i'll grow to hate it quickly haha.
Spoony spoils the basic plot and a cool easter egg, but the world is full of too many interesting things to cover in a short retrospective. His Ultima 5 & 6 reviews spoil more great moments, though I still love 5 and am glad his review encouraged me to play through it. If you plan to play through those games and haven't watched his reviews I'd put them off until you finish them.
I would argue that you should have been suspicious of the Fellowship just from reading the manual (ostensibly the "Book of Fellowship" often referred to in-game). It's written by Batlin himself, in his own inimitable style, and from reading his "re-interpretations" of Britannian history you definitely start to get the feeling that all is not as it seems -- particularly when he starts second-guessing and criticizing the Avatar's (i.e., your) actions in previous games, and questioning how possible it actually is to uphold the traditional Virtues as the Way of the Avatar demands. Open-mindedness is all well and good, but after a while it does come off as Batlin trying to subtly turn his audience against the Avatar and the Virtues.

On the other hand, you can make the case that the game does try to misdirect you on several occasions. Much like how VI led you astray about the Gargoyles, making you believe they were a dark force of evil until you actually got to know them, VII tries to set up the Fellowship as a vaguely sinister organization that's not to be trusted -- but then lets you meet several people who genuinely believe the Fellowship is a force for good in Britannian life, and they actually haven't been brainwashed into believing it. Heck, even the Guardian himself tries to help you during the game by offering advice and alerting you to traps in dungeons, things like that. It really isn't until the final stages of the game that the full truth of the situation becomes apparent. In other words, it's not so much a spoiler as it is a confirmation of something you should have at least suspected from the very start.

Exult adds among other functions a built-in notebook where you can write your own entries. I believe the default hotkey for that is 'N'.
