Okay, I started and boy howdy is it tough, I die or get to a point where im DOOMED. So Any one else having issues with this game. Darn you Minax.

I know how to delete my character so thats one issue solved.
If it gets to be too rough, try offering the guy at the hotel 0 gold a few times to buff your stats. I considered trying that on a second run, but i remember vividly how i ragequit the game the last time I tried to play it and the ring I busted my butt for got stolen by a thief.
I also finished 1 and gave 2 a few attempts. Unlike 1 it seems difficult to be able to maintain enough gold for food and hp.
It seems the blue tassle for getting a ship may help as you can move better and not use food. But i have yet to get one.
The most important thing to do when starting a new game of Ultima II is to get food, ASAP. Unlike the first game (but like Akalabeth and the original 1981 version of Ultima I) you die instantly once your food counter hits zero.

The best place to get food early in the game is in Le Jester, close to where you begin. Look for "Alfred's Fish N Chips" in the northeast corner of town, then stand outside the building so that your character is directly south of one of the letters in "FISH N CHIPS." Then, press S to Steal food, 100 units at a time. You may not always succeed, but keep going. As soon as you start to see guards moving in your direction, hold down your right-arrow key and make a beeline out of town. Save your game by pressing Q, then re-enter Le Jester and repeat the process. Keep doing that until you have tons of food units; I recommend at least 2,500 to start with, but try to get as much as you feel comfortable with. (Just remember Ultima II's stat-rollover bug; if you ever get 10,000 units of food, the game will ignore the ten thousands digit and assume you have zero food and kill you instantly. This holds for HP as well.)

Stealing food in this fashion also lets you save your gold for buying HP from Lord British, which is the only way to raise it in II. Once you have at least 3,000 HP and a decent weapon, you can start attacking characters in towns (again, Le Jester is best for this, as it's easy to escape if you get swarmed by guards) for necessary items such as keys, gems, and the all-important Blue Tassles.

Wait, so you don't get HP by exiting the dungeons/towers? What a ripoff! So not only are the dungeons nearly impossible to survive without godlike stats and equipment, but surviving one conveys no benefit other than treasure which, after buying hp, barely leaves you any leftover scratch for food or other necessities. Mind-boggling.

Wait... you actually go into the dungeons and towers? I beat the game without setting foot in even one of them. They're worthless unless you get the difficulty patch.

They're useless though... the only place to use them is in the dungeons and towers and, like I said, you can beat the game without ever once entering a dungeon.

I tried, and then completely failed on level 2 or 3. After a while I threw my hands up in disgust and piloted a frigate to the west coast of Pangaea and held down the down arrow until what seemed to be the max of overworld baddies had spawned and blew them up for their gold. It eventually got the job done and saved me food expenses (apparently the frigate is stocked with an endless galley), but it was about as fun as watching paint dry.

Stealing food was the tip I needed, now im able to get my food and hp into the thousands. And I can survive.

So far ive found I can grind gold faster in the first level the dungeon than on the overworld. At least until my torches run out.

To get item i just repeatedly attacked the thief at Le Jester and im able to get the items i needed i.e blue tassle. Took a while to a ship to show up. Once one did it was like a new ship would spawn from the old. 4 showed up, but they stopped when i sank the fourth.

One strange thing that happened, i offered 0 gold to the hotel guy and my stats went all the way to 99. Give the difficulty of the game, i can live with it ;-)
I do have the fan patch installed and there was a change to fix the overflow limit on stats, so maybe it didnt work right.

It's either a bug in the original game or an intentional back door that was left in. Either way, it wasn't something the patch did; that one's in all versions of the game I've played (Apple, Commodore, DOS, even Atari 800).

The ship-cloning bug is a glitch, but it's one you can take advantage of. In 1423 BC and 1990 AD, you should use the duplicate ships to create a land bridge between Europe and Lord British's castle; just park a ship into a one-space gap to create a bridge you can just walk over. This way, LB's healing ability is accessible even if you should get your Tassle stolen (not having a tassle only prevents you from actually sailing it, but you can always walk onto a non-hostile ship as if it were so much ground).

Yes it does. At the end, Ultima II is probably my least favorite Ultima.
I have to concur, at least in relation to the games I have actually played (still on U5).
Yeah, I just finished 2, too, and damn do you have to grind for gold. Plus, the game seemed unplayable at first until I read that to get anywhere early on you pretty much HAVE to steal food.

I'm about to start Ultima 3...any tips?

Find the city of Yew(it's hidden in a patch of woods west of Britannia) and kill every cleric in a five mile radius, exit, come back and repeat. No seriously it's easy XP and you often have to resort to it as the PC version of Exodus has a small monster spawn rate, the guy who did the Exodus upgrade patch said he was going to fix that and a few other issues in the next upgrade patch(3.1)
