I just tried posting three messages about Ultima 1 and I go to the Gonk in the ether.
Ah, so one-lners are allowed.

I've got Ultima I running, but there seems to be no hint card for the keyboard commands.

I've sort of worked it out by pressing each key and writing down what happens, and I downloaded all the bonus stuff, but I can't find anything in the manual or the other stuff.

I can SAVE the game by pressing Q for QUIT, but I cannot QUIT. And it keeps saving over the same slot, so I cannot re-start without rolling a new character (yeah, I know this is a 1987 retro game and creating the same character again is no big deal).

My first character is a level 1 male Dwarf with stats of:

STR 30
AGI 30
STA 25
CHA 10
WIS 10
INT 10
HP 150

But I got busted stealing food, so I am down to 3 hp already (I throught S would SAVE the game!)

How do I heal or rest? I tried the tavern but they just sell ale and there seem to be no potions or spells for healing and no inns where I can sleep.

Also, why are my armour and weapons in red when I use Z for the Inventory screen? Food is also red when below 100.

Do the stats matter at all, EG in how much you can carry, how much damage you do, chance of spell success etc?

Is there any info anywhere on weapons and damage they do? Going by Ultima VIII, the more expensive weapons do not always do the most damage. As a Dwarf I wanted to use an Axe, but then I stole a sword and a pistol, so, what the hey?

I have the Armour of Reflection but have no idea what it does.

Cheers!

If I remember correctly the pistol is better than both the sword and axe, but you need a high enough Dex to wield it.

To heal you need to go into a dungeon and fight a few monsters. Then return to the surface and your HP will go up. Repeat that several times and you should be good on HP.

The main thing you need to worry about in the beginning is your food supply; keep that high enough to dungeon delve and then get back to town and buy more.

I'll try to add more in a few minutes after I look at what I have for documentation.

EDIT::
Here's an info file I had floating around: ultima1Info.txt

Stats don't effect much outside of combat also bear in mind there is a bug where armor will not protect you in the dungeons, Armor of Reflection is just really good armor the only thing that you can get armor wise that does anything outside of protection is the Vaccum suit which you need for space travel.

You Heal by going to the dungeons and battling creatures and then going to the surface or by giving tribute to the kings/feudal lords

Red for weapons and armour, if memory serves, means that it's in use/equipped

Yes the most expensive does the most damage

Key commands
A
Attack with the weapon you are holding. Unless fighting in a dungeon, you must then indicate an attack direction.
B
Board a raft, frigate or other form of transportation, or mount a horse. You must be standing on the object to board or mount it. Use eXit to get out or get off.
C
Cast a spell. You must first commit the spell to memory, using Ready.
D
Drop unwanted items while in a castle or town. Dropped items can not be retrieved.
E
Enter a town, castle, dungeon or other landmark. You must be standing on the entrance to enter.
F
Fire a weapon from a ship or other armed vehicle.
G
Get adjacent objects.
H
Hyperjump to other stellar sectors at a speed faster than light. Only available in certain vehicles.
I
Inform and Search to reveal the names of places and things that you may Enter. Also detects secret doors and passages in the dungeons, and may grant a view of your surroundings in future transport craft.
K
Climb up or down ladders in dungeons.
N
Noise to toggle sound on or off.
O
Open a coffin in a dungeon.
Q
Quit and save your progress to disk. You can resume the game later from the point you quit.
R
Ready a specified weapon, put on a selected suit of armour, or learn a magic spell. You must do this before you use an item.
S
Steal from the unwatched counters of shoppes and dark caches in castles. Beware, for the guards frown this type of behaviour.
T
Transact business with merchants or kings.
U
Unlock cells in castles or chests in dungeons.
V
View Change to switch the view in future transport craft between front and top perspectives.
X
eXit or dismount you current transportation and travel on foot.
Z
Stats to display your vital statistics, possessions and spells. Also pauses the game.
SPACEBAR
Pass time and eat
Thank you both so much for that.

Sorry about the daft title of this thread, I posted that one-liner just to see if it would get through, then I replied to it and it added my real message.

Cheers!

That document is really useful, but I think there's a typo:

Bobbits get +10 Wisdom, but -5 Strength, not +5 Strength.
