Such as the more infamous ones that result in background programs getting uninstalled, or entire folders getting deleted...
basically, this is a game I've wanted for a good long while now, but every time I look into it I find absolutely new horrifying horror stories of PC bricking bugs that make me horribly afraid to even consider buying it.

Hoping GOG has long since fixed those bugs... but feel like that might not be the case.

What? Never heard about that, since decades ago.
This game never hacked my pc, at least.
I've had UFO:Afterlight installed since Aug 2020 and I haven't experienced any mysteriously deleted files. At worst, the game runs at the limits of what my processor can handle, so I have to worry about fan/overheating. But that's my processor.

I did have some screen formatting issues when I first tried running the game, which made it impossible to get off the title screen. But the community has an easy fix to the config file for that.

Also I have read that Afterlight won't actually run on newer machines... something to do with newer graphic card / driver incompatibility with the game's outdated 3D engine or something. Dunno if that is actually the case, as I use Windows 7 on a laptop dating from 2010 it runs fine for me, and the game looks/plays great.

I'm really happy with the game, I would probably rate it up there next to XCOM:UFO Defense for fun-factor, even though it is not quite as sandboxy as XCOM.

I am running UFOAL v1.7 at the moment (for 3 months). Windows 7 and I dont specifically periodically update drivers. I dont meet any of those bugs you mentioned.

Bug I meet, most frequently, is graphical in nature. Say, I have three runners set up three mines then run back to 4 waiting. 3-4 hostiles go up into visible range. That's when it bug, the runners most likely lose half of their body and the engine stall to near freeze. Wait a bit and it restore. It happen most often with setting up mines (I suspect the circling icon of mines increase demand) but sometimes it could happen otherwise.

So I say it's more an issue of not enough resources (RAM and graphic card ram) than bug. Weaker machine will meet this one.
