Hello folks!

I wanted to play this game again after many years. Unfortunately after buying it from GOG a few months ago I've seen that it is no longer playable in a modern system using Windows 11.

For a couple of days, I've tried to solve this problem using multiple community patches. They've only worked partially, but I was able to learn a few things with them. I wanted something that would mimic the experience I had 20 years ago, CD audio music included!

Instructions:

1 - Download the patch from this link: NOT AVAILABLE
2 - Extract the archive inside the installation folder. The path looks like this: (...)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Tzar
3 - Run the game using Launch.exe. If it fails, execute the setup executable included in the game first.
4 - (Optional) Make this the default executable to be launched with GOG Galaxy. This can be done by accessing the game settings in GOG Galaxy and then selecting the "Manage Installation / Configure" option. From there, access the "Features" tab and duplicate the first file entry. Make this new entry the default executable and be sure that it points to Launch.exe

Enjoy!

Bonus:
I've included all extra campaigns that were only released in Spain/Italy. A few changes to show the logo and intro video like it is shown in the gold edition is also included.

This works for me. Thanks!
I am glad I was at least able to help one person. I've sacrificed a few days from my Christmas vacations to craft this. Thank you!
Hey, this is really great, thanks for putting it together. I found the CD audio was a little loud relative to the game audio, but that can be configured in winmm.ini.

Tzar is awesome. I've been on an AOE2 kick lately and was very happy to have stumbled on this game.

Thanks, fellow tuga!
Glad I could help!

Are you using the english 1.10 version of the game?
The error clearly states that you copied a data pack file from somewhere to your game and that's not compatible.

Worked for me as well! Thank you!
I downloaded the Tzar and Gog Galaxy to my laptop with windows 11 and it kept crashing immediately when I tried to open it. Then I found your patch and I thought that it would solve the problem and allow the game to load, but it's still not working. A cutscene with game footage loads, but then the game crashes right after that. Then I get the error message "File not found File name - LOCAL\strings.ini" and then "Cannot load file: STRINGS.INI"

Can you help with this issue? I love tzar and want to be able to play it! Thanks in advance.

Hey! I know exactly what your problem is. You copied my patch files inside GOG Galaxy's folder or to another folder that does not contain the game. This is wrong, and an easy mistake to make. If one is to open original location using the icon created in the desktop they will end up there.

The right folder path looks something like this: C:\(...)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Tzar

Give it another go and let me know how it goes!

Hi there! I've made sure to extract the files in your zip file to where the game is installed. However, when I click on Launch, I still have the same problem that EpicMickey had: a short video played and then the error message pops up. I don't use GOG Galaxy and I've made sure that the files are in the game directory.

Any advice you can provide would be helpful.

Hey! This is really strange. I was able to reproduce the problem but only if I copy it to the wrong folder. Can you send me a screenshot of all the files in the folder you've extracted the patch to?

Sure, it's included in the attachments section.

I had a custom launcher from ModDB that I hadn't removed, so I removed it and tried again. The error message doesn't appear anymore, but the game won't run. Plus, the Start bar disappears after I skip the cinematic/cutscene and when the game doesn't start. Same thing after a clean install.

Is there something else I need to do before running your mod/enhancement?

UPDATE: I ran the setup tool and launched from there, and the game started. I saw the custom campaigns included as well. I guess that means it's working nicely.
