I downloaded the Tropico: Reloaded pack, but can't get either game to open correctly. (System specs from DxDiag are at the end of this post). When I run Tropico 1, my cursor "thinks" for a few seconds and the screen goes black...and then goes back to the desktop. When I run Tropico 2, two windows open, but then I get the error message that DirectDraw initialization failed. I haven't run either of these games on this computer before.

Things I've tried:
--re-downloading/rebooting the computer
--disabling UAC
--installing and running the file as an administrator
--installing the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
--trying all different compatibility modes and options

I'm currently downloading the DIrectX SDK since it seemed to work for someone else on these forums.
Any ideas?

Not sure. I keep reading about all kinds of problems with Windows7. I would think thats the problem, not anything in your computer. I don't have any problems with Vista. Only game I have problems with is Kings Bounty, and I think that is a bug in the game.

Your system should be more than strong enough. I can run all 3 games without problems on Win 7 (32 bit). I use a Radeon HD card too except mine is a bit newer but your card should be more than powerful enough. The main difference is that you use the 64 bit version of Win 7

Has anyone ever found a solution to get these to work on windows 7 (64 bit) I cant find a way to and I have the exact same problem as op, cant find any answer on the internet, steam or gog version both the same.

I even have a similar issue with the Direct Draw error in the Cultures games 1 and 2.

I'd love to find a way to fix this and get some of these games to work. Compatability modes don't seam to help.
What i have found on steam:

I had the same problem , "direct draw error initialization failed (80004001) ". After a few try with game's ini file, i found a solution:
(under windows7)
-Go into the installation folder (" \steam\steamaps\common\tropico2\ " usually)
-Set tropico2.exe compatibility (right click, proprieties-->compatibility) to Windows XP SP3
-Open tropico2.ini with a text editor (like notepad )
-Find the line " PlayOpeningMovie=1 " and change it to " PlayOpeningMovie=0 "
-Save and close the file
-Set your screen resolution to 800x600
-Start the game, it should work.

NOw... exit the game
-Open tropico2.ini and change back the line " PlayOpeningMovie=0" to " PlayOpeningMovie=1 "
-save and close the file
-set resolution to 800x600 if you have change it
-restart the game

Now, if it starts, you can play with opening video, else... change back the line in the ini file.

Now i can play the game without issue. I havo to change resolution every time I play (my usually desktop resolution it's 1280x768 :D ) but... it's work!
Quite annoying solution, but it work.
I managed to get Tropico 2 to run somehow - Still no luck on Tropico 1.
I think I have an old Win XP box somewhere, might have to dig that out.

Never had any problems which I know may not be a huge comfort but the games do work. I have in the past downloaded DirectX 9c for other games which Win 7 doesn't include so maybe that helps. I also install to a non standard folder but beyond that I've never needed to change any settings or run in compatibility mode.

This is with Win 7 64bit although with a Nvidia card.

FWIW, I'm with Standup. I'm running them both on 64 bit W7 with no problems whatsoever.
