Sorry for the late answer, we seem to have missed your message. Unfortunately there is no Linux version planned for Trine 4.

I believe the reason for no Linux version is that the one Linux person who did all the Linux builds of their previous games left the team a while back. Guess they didn't see the Linux market as substantial enough to get a new hire. Sad, but understandable.

Well, not really, unless you mean way back during Trine 2 times. There were several people working on various parts of Linux port and most are still at Frozenbyte.

There are really quite a few small issues that make Linux porting more expensive than it used to be. For example, since we dropped Mac version too, we don't get "free" renderer for Linux. We also don't have any particular need, whereas in T2 time frame Humble Bundle was important and required Linux and Mac versions.

Thanks for your reply !

However, while I understand the motives behind not providing a Linux version, I'm not sure it's a wise move. It's not like Linux is losing influence, quite the contrary actually. I moved to Linux recently, and still have Windows, so running games on Windows is theoretically one reboot away, but in practice, I usually just don't want to reboot... When buying a game, the unavailability of a Linux native version has become an issue in the decision process, and while I don't see that as a definitive obstacle, each time I still decide to get the game, there's a little voice in my head that tells me "Maybe you'll never play it !". And actually, since I made the move to Linux in september, I've not played a single Windows game.

So of course that's only me, and I'm not sure I'm representative of a general trend, but I'm pretty sure I'm not alone...
It's to bad really, I enjoyed the previous games I guess I won't get to play Trine 4 :(
I just came to know about the Trine series just today - and the big question is why the first two in the series did not get an update to 64 bit (on Linux this may soon be essential as it already is for MacOS).

The 3rd got bad critics due to 3D ... which may be justified ... and being short ... and the last one is Windows only ... seems to be a degradation in quality ...

And though Linux is still not the big market it is really growing.
One may lose customers which may introduce others.
From my point of view making only Windows games seems like bad coding habits ... and concerning the current situation I don't think dropping Linux is wise.

Personally I don't by Windows games at all - and have no good feeling when the devs are around and don't create a 64 bit version which would have been appropriate in 2008 the latest.
Only that it's not necessary does not mean to keep the coding of 10 years before:
AMD x86-64 was 2003 and Intel's EM64T in 2004 ... and even in 2020 you may see 32 bit versions while no longer these CPUs play any role in gaming ...

So if devs would change there mind to support Linux with 64 bit Binaries, I would buy the entire series ...
due to the cooperation mode which is a game changer.
But now I don't know if that would be wise - as maybe I would not be able to play it under Linux with HW bought in 2+ years ... (except the weak point 3) - that's just sad.

Hello Linda,

thanks for the clarification, albeit not the one I was hoping for.

I just stumbled over Trine 4 today, and I would have bought it right away for its full price if it had a Linux version. So alas, you don't get my money and I don't get Trine 4 for Linux.

Just a friendly, regretful feedback in the hope that Frozenbyte will someday support Linux again.

Happy holidays
V4V
I could successfully run Trine 4 on Crossover Linux 20 with Zorin OS 16.
So at least there is a way to play this game also under Linux
