Stuff: Not sure this will help you but here is my install steps that worked for me on a Win 7 Pro PC:
1) Download the
DirectX End-User Runtimes. Create a directory to unzip to as that is all the file does. After it unzips, go to the directx directory you created and run the directxsetup.exe as an administrator. Seems Win 7 is missing / requiring some of these files??
2)Create a directory on C:\ . . . I named mine C:\Games
3) Run the Treasure setup.exe as an admin ( Right click the exe file and click "Run as an administrator" on the resulting dialog.
4) On the first dialog of the GOG setup, press the Options button in the lower left corner and using the browse button . . point the install to the new Games directory or the one you created. Install.
5) After install. right-click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark the Run this program in compatibility for" box and set it to Windows 95 compatibility. You might try different compatibility modes but the Win 95 (so far) stopped the freeze-ups for me.
On the same Compatibility tab, under the Privilege Level, check-mark the "Run this program as an administrator" check-box. Close the properties dialog and fire it up.
Hope it helps =)
Edit: I think different systems may work better using different compatibility modes or some may not require any compatibility. Trial and error it seems.
1. Did that
2. Did that
3. Did that
4. Did that
5. Did all of the compatibility modes
And this was before I even made the post here and I still get the problem where the Action key, regardless of which key I bind it to, stops responding.
