I've read both versions, one where two players can play using a gog version and a steam version, and one where 2 different versions aren't compatible, so which is it?

And how easy would it be to play with my steam friend, if I have a GOG version of Torchlight 2?

I must admit, I do not know, BUT if you open now a ticket with GOG (unless somebody knows for sure and will post) and ask for, before buying, and don't get response or similar you shall have no problem getting the money back from GOG in case it does not work (and you bought it last minute) ;)

You can play together but you both need a Runic account for multiplayer.
You can play just fine.

1. Buy the game .
2. From in-game create a runic account(wont ask you for key or anything).
3. Log in and add your friend as friend in TL2.
4. You now should be able to play co-op just fine.
