Garret can't actually oom till the last game though, right? Or did I miss a control?

In Thief 3, Garret can zoom and has night vision while zoomed, so that's probably where people got the night vision idea., In Thief 2, he does not have night vision, although he can zoom (default keys are [ to zoom in and ] to zoom out, these can be changed from the options menu). This works a lot like the "bow zoom". Garett also can use a special piece of equipment called the Scouting Orb. This is thrown, much like a flash bomb, and once it lands it interfaces with Garrett's mechanical eye to let him view the surroundings from the Orb's location. So you can throw it around a corner and then take a look, for example. When looking through the Orb, things have a kind of grainy camera look to them, which actually looks kind of similar to the night vision from Thief 3. However, the grainy-ness makes it hard to see much, so in practice it doesn't really give a better view than Garret would normally have. The main advantage is it lets him look from a different vantage point. You can pick the Orb back up after using it too, which is nice.
Now that we are talking about Thief 3 I dont have it on the GOG website I bought it at hollywood videos when the store was going out of buisness on sale for the xbox. I bought it on a inpulse because the box cover was cool and the premise on the back seemed promising. Thief 3 is the first Thief game I played and it took me a while to get in but once I did bam, I love the series. I looked up what other people have to say about it and giving T3 alot of crap but I think there wrong about how it goes away from its roots. However if T3 was the same thing as the previous 2 (which still are great) then T3 would have goten alot more shit then it has going a new way. The only downsides of T3 is the inability to swim, lack of pre-briefing quotes, and no scout orb which was mentioned before. The enemys of T3 unnerved me the most out of all the games I have played recently especialy The hammer haunts, puppets and even zombies on the ship level "Spoiler". T3 is a great game with a few shortcomings which is still very enjoyable, and is a very worthy title to carry the Thief name.

In my opinion, the major failing of Thief 3 is the linear small levels, compared to the massiveness of the levels in the first two. That being said though, Thief 3 is still a great game. It's just in the awkward position of being compared to the first 2.

Yea I know, the reason why I'm defending thief 3 is because it is the first Thief game that I played and I also forgot to mention another weak part of T3 the absence of rope arrows. I finished Thief Gold and now I'm near the end of Thief 2.
Yeah, Thief 3 is still a great game, it was just a little disappointing as a sequel to the first two, primarily because of the tiny locations. I also though that the open city was poorly implemented... it was laughably small, feeling even smaller than individual levels from the first two games that took place in small sections of the city. And there was no real reason to explore the city either. All that resulted was that I had way too much money and was always stocked full of every tool and item, which took a lot of the challenge out of the missions (unless I forced myself to not use them).

But the dynamic shadows were awesome, and I actually thought the level designers did a good job within the engine limitations. It just deserved a much more powerful engine.
The Shadlebridge asslyum/orphange is one of the memorable levels of gaming and there was also another level of a manor that took place at the coast, The lady in the sea manor in grief of her husbands death also creep me out because you never know what crazy people will do or think. A name which I forgoten but yea the idea of open city exploration was probably rushed and the city streets were narrow or maybe they were designed that way to create a clusterphobic feeling that makes the feeling of "The City" compact. However you never leave the city in T3 not even for a short amount of time. Anything else im missing note me.
Yeah Waltorious that's it! I forgot all about that. I haven't played Thief 3 in a while. Just started playing it again.

It's very jarring to play this game right after playing the first two. The first time I played Thief 3 was right when it came out so it was a few years since I played the first two and the goodness of those games was a dim memory. The thing I miss the most about the first two while playing the third is the voice acting. I really really miss that funny stupid guard voice & the random mutterings of the guards. So freaking funny! The voice actors in Thief 3 aren't nearly as funny.

Also, the maps don't seem to change when you are in a multistoried building which makes navigation a little difficult...but the levels are so small & cramped so I guess it doesn't really matter. Anyway after these complaints, I am slowly enjoying Thief 3 again. I WILL finish it this time. Sorry to derail the thread.

Edit: Speaking of funny voice acting, did anyone find the voice of Karras to be amazingly funny? I was really annoyed in that last level but every time I heard that voice I couldn't help but smile :)

It's definitely worth finishing. Like the other two games, it has a fantastic ending.

I was blown away when I learned that Stephen Russell does the voices for both Garrett and Karras. Apparently some guards too. Talented guy!

Yeah, that's some very impressive range, 'specially since you often hear the two voices side-by-side. Plus, it means that in a giving level around 85% of the voices are Stephen Russel (there are a couple other guard voices).
Damn, I never knew the voice actor for Garrett did other voices as well. I wonder if he also did that really stupid-sounding guard voice. Thanks for that info, Waltorious!

Cool. Funny because I was going on about how I miss that voice and low & behold, I made it to the docks in Thief 3 and there's that great voice once again. I couldn't be happier :)
I have got to say that burricks rub me the wrong way in this game, especially since I somehow feel compelled to knock them down with blackjack rather than to kill them. And it takes a long time sometimes to blackjack them, it almost feels like they have eyes behind their backs. More than once I was leaning to knock them but in the last split second they managed to avoid the blow. Crazy...
