So I just downloaded this, and I love it. But I realized after beating the first mission there are no cutscenes. They don't work. I've been looking them up on youtube on my iPhone in between missions.

I don't really understand what's going on, either. I get that Garrett was an orphan, he tried to steal something from a keeper, the keeper invited him to join them, he joined, learned lots, and then what, branched out on his own? Who is Cutty? Is he stealing just for the fun of it or what?

Definitely use the TGFix pack in the sticky. Fixes a lot of issues, including the missing cutscenes.

Garrett's split with the Keepers is intentionally left ambiguous. All we know at the start of the game is that they had a falling out of some sort, and Garrett left and became a thief instead. You will learn a little more about Garrett and the Keepers as you play through the game.

Cutty is Garrett's fence, to whom Garrett sells his stolen goods. He's not really introduced; the game just kind of starts in the middle of things, and Garrett doesn't always explain much. You'll learn more about Cutty in the first few missions.

I downloaded the TGfix but it didn't work, and then I saw that GOG included the ddfix in the game files.. So what does that mean? I don't get what to do.

ddfix is in the post tagged as the solution, but there are other fixes later in the thread, including the xvid codec which seems to have helped a lot of people.
