It's a small complaint, seeing as other versions of the game from other DD services don't start at all, but the movies aren't working ingame. They work fine when I play them with VLC outside of the game, though.

Which OS do you have?
Got any codec packs installed?

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, no codec packs installed since VLC plays everything without them.

With Service Pack installed?
Any AV software with registry or real-time protection enabled?

edit: and customary question: did you run both the installer and the game as an administrator?

Indeo Video isnt really supported in Vista or 7 and this is why you cant view the movies, the codec packs dont usually have this one now. However it is actually built into the OS but has been disabled.

This is how to fix the videos :

1. Using your run command type CMD

If you dont have the run command there in your start menu in the search bar type command and select command prompt

2. You will now have what looks like a black DOS window open.

3. In that window type :

regsvr32 ir50_32.dll

then press enter

Now you can close the command prompt and start the game, your videos will work now all the time as this is not just a temporary fix. This fixes any games that use the Indeo codec like System Shock 2 & Thief :)

Still, we run it on clean OS with movies playing so it shouldn't be necessary;
Nevertheless, I hope it works for users above.
This definately works.

We had a Nostalgic Gaming thread at HEXUS and I posted up for users there how to get the vids working and sort out core affinity as it crashes if you are on a multicore system. Pretty sure you GOG guys will have sorted that one though.

Thief series are games I hold close to my heart. Got the first edition version still (Will be buying the GOG version tomorrow though) Thief was actually the very first game I bought for my PC.
The regsvr32 ir50_32.dll command seemed to do the trick (but I had to run CMD as an administrator and do "cd c:\windows\SysWOW64" before running it) - when running the game as an administrator. For some reason they don't work when the game is run as a normal user.

I can confirm that this works. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and after registering the dll and running the game in admin mode, the movies magically worked! I'm glad because they add a lot to the game.
the .dll fix didnt work for me. after trying out many fixes, i just put the game in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP2 (other modes didnt work). after that all videos worked perfectly.

I'm running windows 7 64-bit
AFAIR, for me useful variant was running the exe with admin-rights. Or that was for Thief 2, don't remember now.
Win 7 64 bit

For others with the same problem, heres an eejits guide for Windows 7 64 bit

My specs :
Windows 7 64 bit

Solution :
Open Command Box (type command in the 'search program and files' box and hit enter).
Type 'cd c:\windows\SysWOW64' - then hit enter.
Type 'regsvr32 ir50_32.dll' - hit Enter.

You should get a message saying registered successfully. Remember this and the game must be run as an administrator to be successful.

If anyone successfully registering using a different method / Windows version also posts their solution we should cover everything pretty quickly....

(thanks to iainmet and ymgve for the solutions - I'm really just repeating their good work...;)
Uninstalling all codec packs and running the game in the admin mode worked for me.
