I bought the Thief 1 + 2 double pack from Sold Out a couple of years ago and neither would run on my PC. The games were incompatible with my graphics card (nVidia GTS 8600) and so I could launch them but it would crash as soon as I tried to play.

Does this re-release by GOG still have these problems, or have they been fixed? I really want to pick them up, but don't want to get fleeced twice in a row...

Alternatively, does anybody have any advice on how I would get my original purchase to work? I trudged through old forum entries on the web for hours, all to no avail.

I'm having the same problem, so I thought I'll just post here rather than make a new thread. I installed it on Windows 7, the intro movie seems to work but it keeps crashing whenever I try to start a new game. I've tried every fix available: the sticky, the ddfix, Scrooge's permanent movie fix, changed the affinity, you name it. I even tried running in compatibility mode

But I still get the same message "Thief has stopped working" offering to check for an online solution, and we all know how useful that is

Just to double-check, do you have DirectX 9.0c installed? If not, get it. Don't worry, it installs alongside later versions of DirectX so it won't mess up your more modern games. Also, make sure you are both installing and running the game as administrator. You may also want to change the install location to somewhere other than Program Files.

You may have tried these already but since you didn't list them I figured I'd check.

Already done, done and done. I've got DirectX 11. Do I have to downgrade?

No, but you DO need to install DirectX 9.0c alongside your DX11. It sounds like you've done that already?
Done that. Still doesn't work. *sigh* Thanks anyway. I guess GoG brings back old games with the good AND the bad

It seems that most people have been able to get the GOG version working. Can we get more information about your system? Graphics card and processor? What version graphics drivers are you using?

Also if you can list out exactly which fixes you've tried already that would help. For most people, simply installing the GOG version as admin should run, and then adding the TGfix will allow higher resolutions and optional improved graphics.
Yeeeahh, the thing is, it's not exactly the GOG version

I saw the game here recently, wanted to buy it, but I'd heard things about the problems involved with installing it. Sooo, I(please don't shoot me) decided to pirate it and see if it'd work on my PC. Thief II worked thankfully, so I bought it, but this one didn't

I'm pretty sure that the GOG version actually includes some fixes that you won't find in a pirated version (unless you pirated the GOG version). There's apparently a custom installer that fixes things like processor core affinity and other issues that typically crop up. So you might have more success buying it from GOG.

Getting the original CD versions to run these days is a lot harder, although I think it can be done... you'll have more luck getting advice on that in the Through the Looking Glass forums, where there's a lot of discussion of how to get the original disc versions running.
Hey guys, wazzup? I'm new at GOG, and I bough Thief 1 cause I never could acctually play it (only thief 2 and 3).
The thing is, I was able to play the game, and I got to the "The Sword" Mission (level 6).
The game was working fine, but today I was about to resume the game, and it crashes just after the loading screen.
I though it was a corrupted save, so I've tried other files, and even starting a new game, with no success. I even tried re-installing the game.

Any ideas?
Hi folks,

I bought TGold and T2 here and Thief 2 works rightaway, widescreen, high resolution and all, but Thief Gold does not. The game launches, but keeps windowed, menus and cutscenes work and play, but once game is loaded the (windowed) screen remains black.

Any ideas what to do?

Edit: I read GoG has possibly updated the installer? I redownload and retry then.

Psychomorph, have you checked the sticky thread in this forum? I assume so, since I don't think it's possible to get Thief 2 running in widescreen without the unofficial fan patches, but if you haven't, take a look. There's a lot of advice there for getting Thief 1 running properly.
I was wrong, I indeed applied the widescreen patch to Thief 2 to have it in widescreen, as GoG version doesn't support it, otherwise it runs fine.

And I did fix Thief Gold finally, too. Reinstalled with the redownloaded installer, initially it was like before, but after reinstalling again (I think) it worked and I only had to run the widescreen patch. Runs perfectly now.

Though TGFix 1.09 screws things up and game crashes. I'll read the sticky thred then.
