I rate this very high on list of fairly simple things that would improve gameplay. It wouldn't change the balance of power either... but would make controlling Geralt more sensible.

Obvious problems that this would solve:

1. The need to react to distant ranged attacks. As it is now, we basically have to run around like chickens to deal with ranged attacks that can be coming from maybe 5 to 6 times the "combat range" that Geralt responds to. I've seen archers shooting at me from at least 50 m! Makes no sense and makes for awkward gameplay.

2. The need to break off combat with some grace. The "combat mode" moveset is not suited to simply fleeing, and as things are now, disengaging, either by simply running and/or climbing, can be quite awkward sometimes.

Simplest solution would be: When we manually draw a sword combat mode starts, and when we manually sheath a sword combat mode ends. Fairly simple. Would require players to use some sense as to what sword to use, but only when manually taking control... is that asking for too much?
100% agree

this auto sheath stuff is ridiculous

"we basically have to run around like chickens to deal with ranged attacks"

hilariously true
