I just finished the game and enjoyed it for the most part some iffy parts but normal for the type of game but, I did find I had to spoil part of the experience, starting off I just ran around the map picking off the white markers and finding new locations and doing side quests, but I started to notice the main story was below my level so I started doing it I gained 5 levels in doing so, and out levelled the side quests and contracts, atm all my side quests are grey and all but 2 contracts are grey, since they don't reward exp seems not worth the effort in doing them.

not sure if spoiler or not so ill skip here

last few quests where 2-3 levels below me and where very easy. disappointing the fights just a little.

SPOILER WARNING

Yeah, killing Eredin and his last general was pretty easy, even more if you use dimeritium bombs to screw the general, and special attacks like whirling strike against Eredin. The game was great, but I'll wait until some balance mod comes out before playing it again :p
Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

the game has to allow people to finish the main quest without doing ANY of the other stuff and also has to allow you to do lot's of the other stuff before finishing the main quest.

So exactly how do you propose they do that? Leveling of mobs is one way (aka Skyrim). Instead they picked a method where if you outrank a quest you get limited to no XP.

Besides you do the side quests not just for XP but for many other reasons. Some side quests are rather intricate. And the witcher contracts can be hard even if you out level them unless your till prepare correctly.

No matter what they decided someone (you or another) would complain.

EDIT: And there is another thread that complains there isn't enough XP. LOL
