Seriously guys, I don't get all the fuzz about Nvidia's Hairworks. It just looks awful, it really does. I turned it on just to take a look at and figure out why the hype but I had to laugh once I saw it at work. The hair just looks down right ridiculous. I took some screenshots so you can see for yourselves.
With Hairworks enabled Geralt looks like he's balding or something, thin hair, unnatural, like he just got through his first day of chemo (no offense). Whilst with Hairworks disabled he has full hair which natural and a bit wild like should, he's a goddamn monster slaying, magician effing, whore mongering, medieval badass, not Conchita Wurst :P
But seriously, I think this feature looks just terrible and it costs me 10 frames. Dafuq?
Would like to hear what you guys think.

P.S.: why can't I post links to image host sites?

In Geralt case: hairs have realistic simulation and reacts on things such as wind for example (a long beard, too, btw).

Go and check your horse with Hairworks on. It looks much better.
there isnt a lot of hype about it, just ppl saying it has a big performance hit....and as the above guys say its dynamic, a still picture kind of takes away the entire point of it...

great thread

People should understand difference between "simulation" and "pre-rendered". It's never will have equal performance.
Nobody ever said Hairworks technology is for every PC.

Hairworks continues to run, even while everything else is paused. I sometimes hit escape while fighting wolves, just so I can look at their hair. I hardly notice it when I'm dodging for my life. It could be one of those details that even when you don't notice it, it still has an immersive effect on you subconsciously.

Yes, it looks amazing...on an Nvidia card. On a Radeon it just looks ridiculous ;)

Oh god. Carebears dlc confirmed, lol.
Well, I stand (kind of) corrected. Once I changed Tesselation from AMD optimized to 16x it looked much better. But boy what a frames drop xD and still not as good as on Nvidia cards...
I also disabled hairworks.
Kinda ridiculous the default for the setting is for it to have MSAA 8x working on every strand... The setting seems almost designed to tank performance, a cynic would say that's exactly what it was for, to sell the most recent video cards.

I totally agree with him!!!
I've experimented with the settings now a little bit and for Hairworks to look as good as on Nvidia cards I have to crank Tesselation up to 32x. It's ridiculous. The frames drop is unbearable. I then modified redering.ini and set HairworksMSAA to 0 without any loss in quality whatsoever!!! Now the game runs around 30 fps but still, it is a huge performance issue!!!

Um...First of all it doesn't look like he's balding, secondly hairworks is amazing looking in my opinion. Especially on monsters.
Um...first of all he does look like he is balding. I know what I see on my monitor, trust me. Secondly, for Hairworks to look as good as on Nvidia cards you have to crank Tesselation up to ridiculous amounts. If you don't do that and let it to be AMD optimized Geralt does look like he is fucking balding!

So now I've turned up Tesselation up to 64x, which is the maximum, and now it looks like on Nvidia cards. If I hadn't set HairworksAAlevel to 0 from 8 in the rendering.ini I probably wouldn't be able to run this game at all. No way Nvidia didn't screw AMD customers and everyone with an Nvidia card below the 900 series deliberately!!!

I have a GTX 680 and can run the game maxed out with tweaks in the .ini files. Doesn't look like he's balding on my screen. Even the screenshot you showed off it looks more like lighting than balding...
