Got the game as a bundle with the GTX 970.

Can't find the gamma setting anywhere and spent 10 minutes fiddling with the menu.

Tried tweaking the visual.ini but still too dark.

Is this just my copy or what?

It has gamma slider for sure, I've used it.

I went through every single option, even the gameplay, audio and control setting.

I don't know what's wrong. I'll just reinstall the damn thing and see what happens.

You can use NVIDIA Control Panel as well to configure brightness/gamma/contrast.

But now I cannot find it too! WTF, I can swear that I moved gamma slider. It was on different machine and different install, but it shouldn't matter.

Could it be the patch?

My eyes are straining and now I have to put off playing the game. Too darn dark.

No, it can't be the patch, because without the patch you can't launch the game.
If everything fails:

\\Documents\The Witcher 3
Open user.settings
look for GammaValue
change it to your liking
OK, I just figured it out. You have to set the game in fullscreen instead of the default borderless window in the graphics setting. Then the Gamma setting will come out.

This is really annoying hiding the gamma option like that.

That's right! That what I did on the first machine and didn't on the second. Sorry, I just didn't remember about it. Glad you found it yourself!

Borderless Window uses the Gamma settings from your desktop, it's a Window after all. Because of this you don't have a Gamma option in any game when running the game this way, to change Gamma in this mode you have to alter the Gamma value for your desktop (at least NVidia has an option for this in their control panel).

Yeah unfortunately Windowless Border for me still has the game in fullscreen. So I had to go through all this fuss. Game still a bit dark so I'll tweak the settings in Nvidia panel and see. At least I'm not squinting anymore.

Please bear in mind that every game running on windows, when choosing windowed/bordeless window option will draw gamma from desktop. Gamma option is only available in fullscreen mode. Nvidia cards have an option to choose gamma for specific aps so you can adjust there (do not know if it works for every card tho). Also do not know if AMD cards have the same option.

Just wanted to confirm that is the correct solution to the issue. Sorry for not catching the thread sooner to help out!

Edit: in terms of explanation, as GingerNaTT said:

So this is not a technical error, as it may seem at first, but rather an element of design not of the game, but of the way hardware and software or various types of software share responsibilities for certain settings. :)

Nope, mine doesn't have a gamma slider either. I've seen screenshots of people's menu, and mine is definitely different than those of you who have a gamma slider. I can't understand why.
Oh wait a minute, I just realised that I'm not in full screen mode.
