subtle54: I find normal keeps you on your toes and isn't frustrating, except for the Gargoyle found in a side cavern during Wandering in the Dark.. I must be at to low a level when doing this quest, as the narrowness of the cave and the lack of Golden Oriole make this battle extremely frustrating and I normally turn it down to easy after 5 or 6 attempts, then practically insta kill. But then, I'm in my 60's so my reflexes are probably slower than most.
I also found that Gargoyle challenging (playing on Blood and Broken bones difficulty) for the reasons you stated, and the fact his ground thump hurts you greatly.
I made the mistake of leaving behind Keira Meitz before the cave closed shut on me. So I loaded a slightly earlier save, dragged her lazy butt in with me, and she happily stunned the Gargoyle repeatedly so I could go in for the hit. Made it much easier!

Your reflexes must be pretty darn good to be playing as you are!

pingu53: still can't beat this FUCKING SHREIKER

I CANNOT GET MORE THAN 1 HIT OFF WITHOUT IT DOING A 360 SWIPE THAT TAKES OFF 50% OF MY HP AND MAKES ME BLEED THE OTHER 50%

im fucking level 12 and its level 8 holy shit, why the fuck does geralt get stunned after 2 hits even after stunning it with aard?
Lower the difficulty. I played the Shrieker on Blood and Bones and honestly was expecting far more challenge from this mini boss.

Try this strategy, keep away from him until he takes off, then when he flies overhead use your crossbow to force him to land. Be sure to use Quen then run in and use a heavy and fast attack, then immediately roll (not dodge) sideways. Wait for him to swipe then go back in and attack. Use Quen immediately after getting hit so that you always have a shield.

Hope that helps, like the Souls games you have to figure out the strategy and subtleties of the enemies. I have refused to lower the difficulty for the whole game since I like to frustrate myself, bite my tongue, and explode inwardly, but the combat does get easier after many fights with enemies. I actually am confident to play the game on hardest in the next playthrough.

Good luck

pingu53: maybe im just too used to souls games where if you have the skill you can go the whole game taking 0 damage

Glocon: Well, I love Witcher 3 combat system for the exact opposite reason. It seems very fair to me.
Besides applying all the good advices mentioned above, why to not lower difficulty?
If you didn't play Witcher 2, just take time to familiarize with combat system!

I may be wrong but Witcher 3 seems, on the contrary, less difficult than its predecessor to me (I mean Death march vs Dark mode).
I actually found Witcher 2 slightly better with the combat, I feel that moves flowed more smoothly with added finesse (hard to explain). Controls for general movement in 2 were also far superior, in this game when out of combat I get frustrated with walking into posts and fences far too often (and yes, I am using an Xbox controller). The controls sometimes do very weird things, every time I go to one specific town in Skellige as I move through the archway my character moves by himself toward the wall (every single time). The inputs just don't often respond as expected (many people have commented on this).

And swimming, OMFG, well lets say I have let Geralt drown several times to teach him a lesson for never having taken lessons!

Still, best game eva.

i cant be fucking bothered with this unbalanced, unfair garbage fight, seems i'll just have to lower it to the lowest difficulty, i refuse to believe this is me being bad

the damn thing is completly undodgable, it truly is, the devs really screwed this fight up

i don't watch videos of how other people beat it because i like to work these things out myself, but im guessing everyone else beats it with quen abuse and chugging food/potions, theres no way you can beat this fair and square without some scummy tactics

I were very disappointed too. Compared to witcher 2, W3 lacks responsiveness.
In W2, when you moved the mouse, Geralt moved instantly at any speed. Not the case anymore. This is IMO the proof that W2 were designed for keyboard and mouse, where W3 is made for pads.

But it's still one of the best games I've ever played, if not the best =)

didnt lower difficulty, just abused the hell out of quen....was easy

shame quen abuse is the only way to beat some things fairly, i like the idea of actually using skilled dodges and not relying on shields

Yeah, it's weird how they linked the camera to movement (look wherever, and Geralt moves in that direction). It was not like that in W2, and I think that is a large part of the problem. I know of few games that do this, even GTAV which was designed for consoles lets you look around and still move independently in a different direction.

Other things being equal, shield helps, for sure =)
Personally I like moving towards the camera. I usually change my direction by moving the camera, which for me as a shooter player works fairly naturally. I play Games like Assassin's Creed the same way. I tried W3 with a controller, and changed it back immediately. Just can't live with that camera management of the sticks.

However, the delay when pushing a direction key is annoying, and in general, moving outside of combat is a mess. Especially when trying to loot something like a crate that is in the corner of the room, or under a roof. Or worse, on a small alcove. A juggle, made even worse by Geralt only looting what he is looking at, not what the camera looks at. Which was much easier in W2.

The combat controls I like a lot. They have something Dark Souls-esque eventhough it plays different. But the nuances I loved in Dark Souls, I love here as well. So I try to fight whatever I see, because combat is so much fun. Although I had to change some of the keybindings around. Like using Mouse 4 to dodge, so I'm activating Dodge with my camera hand, while pressing a movement key with my left hand. I can change the dodging angle with my camera aswell.
All in all I really like the combat system. Except that you can't jump in fight, you jump instead. So whenever you need to jump up something in combat, you are out of luck. Or better, getting out of your boat to dive underwater when Sirens appear, which are one-hit killed under water with the crossbow, but take multiple hits if I shoot at the from the boat.

I totally agree with re-binding the dodge and roll to mouse buttons 4 and 5 if you have them, having them on the shift and alt keys is daft and awkward. Not easy to keep your hand on direction dodge and roll all at once with that configuration and because my hand ends up covering the keys I find myself hitting the wrong one from time to time and it always seems to be at the worst possible moment.

Personally I love the combat it W3, my only gripe is that when faced with lager groups of enemies it can be very difficult to break them apart and avoid being swamped. But after a little practice it gets easier,

Alternative Aard does the job pretty well =)
