Tutorial tips are a JOKE. Poorly thought out gameplay. As another user puts it in a concise example...

"New to the game. Tutorial hint pops up as the dragon swoops down and I'm fried before I even read the hint."

Seriously?? And the tips pop out at random times when you are busy in action. Then they disappear automatically before you can read them. Sure, I can go through the journal to read them when I get a chance--but how stupid is that?!

Add in the clunky gameplay fight mechanics and unbalanced starting difficulty, and I've lost A LOT of confidence that the gameplay was designed by intelligent people. Maybe CD Projekt should trying to tell stories in movies instead of games. Because they don't seem to know how to make a game. Or at least use some of that big budget to hire some serious experienced game designers.

Now I guess I will just try to put everything on easy mode and watch the game like a $50 movie for the graphics and story. But then there is the problem with the English voice volume being unbalanced and being too hard to hear--and I hate subtitles. Oh well, I guess I'll wait for a patch before I'll even start the game again.

It seems a lot of users share the same feelings and complaints, too. The graphics are great and very cinematic and there seems to be some interesting themes in the game, else I wouldn't even plan to try it again after some patches.

Put simply by another user...

"I'll be uninstalling this until they significantly patch. This game is beautiful, but everything gameplay-wise is ungainly and frustrating: Navigation, combat, looting, taking potions, you name it. Geralt dies if a mosquito lands on his arm. The constant clickityclickity with unresponsive controls is maddening."

You should be able to find all the hints/tutorial in your journal, take a look there once you are done fighting etc..

Doesn't seem stupid to me, at all. There is a lot in the game to read: a lot of backstory to do with characters and locations and monsters and the like in your journal; a lot of books to be picked up, found or bought; Dandelions re-telling of each of the Quests you pick up; and, the tutorial hints in your journal. There is a lot to learn with the game (Signs, Swords, bombs, dodging, parrying, etc, etc). If you didn't get something fully the first time, how difficult is it to press J, click Tutorial and scroll to to the bottom (the last tutorial hint will be at the bottom) and read the hint? The game also comes with an instruction manual... it covers the game mechanics pretty thoroughly... did you think to read that, or is that 'stupid' to you as well? Why is reading something stupid?

It's disappointing that you aren't enjoying the game. Personally, I am. Thoroughly enjoying it. Played the original (and been a PC RPG player for many, many years), and it's shaping up to be one of my all time favourite games, and all time favourite RPGs (I doubt it'll beat t BG Trilogy, and Morrowind still holds a piece of my heart). I appreciate most of the design choices made in regards to changes from the original... Potions and preparation are a proper tactical choice and necessity, fighting is visceral, Geralt isn't invincible, he can't take on 5 or 6 opponents unless he fights smart, all the Witcher tricks are needed to make your way through the game.
I thought RPG game always emphasized heavily on reading. That's why most of RPG games included journal to keep track the story, quest and other important things. So, actually it's not that stupid.

I think a game that emphasize on reading, story is an adventure game (if not much or no rpg elemet are in it) , you can find many old dungeons rpg game from the 90s that were mostly about fighting and exploring those dungeons without much reading/story. But then good stories (and much reading) are often parts of good rpg too.

you guys are being off topic
Post edited May 20, 2011 by TsunamiZ
why are you guys replying about amount of reading? i'm not complaining about amount of reading. although i do think the game does have too much text and should be more concise. but i didn't complain about that. maybe you guys should do more reading of my message before replying.
I am assuming that the people here who claim to like reading don't actually like reading. Can't explain otherwise how this topic went off-topic starting with post 2.

As you correctly say, the Tutorial in the Intro battles is a joke, nothing is explained fluidly, and all the important things, like what Vigor is and does, or how to block (and that Vigor is responsible for blocking!) is only explained in a obscure position in the journal.

Except that is something you need to know to get anywhere in the battles of the Intro (At least on Normal). I know its also written in the Manual, but who reads a Manual when the game claims to have a Tutorial? If the Tutorial fails to explain the major game elements properly and without me having to open my Journal and actively seek for it, then it failed.
