Hi guys,

I'm sorry if this has already been reported and solved by someone else, but if that's the case, I'm really struggling to find it.

I've got twin Radeon HD 6970's in a CrossFire setup and have been enjoying the game since release ... though, I'm not sure I was getting all the performance I could squeeze out of it (in other words, I wasn't too worried with turning my settings up beyond high, what auto-detect recommended). Nevertheless, I was quite happy.

Then, unrelated to Witcher 2 (I bought the GoG version) my Steam client detects that I should get a Catalyst (Radeon drivers) up date -- so, I accept. No sooner had the installed finished than I could find nasty light "bleeding" "orb" "wtf" issues which, it seems, people have been plagued by long before it happened to me.

Cut to the present day: I believe I've managed to clean my PC of old drivers and am now running what I think is the latest Catalyst drivers, i.e. 11.6 with CAP1 (11.6)

Everything seems nice, and for all I know I might even be getting a better frame rate (I don't even know how you guys measure that), but ... the "target" icon that used to auto-lock on the nearest monster (and which you'd have to press ALT to get it to perma-lock) has disappeared. I've been playing with my settings and so far only turning on Ubersampling makes it appear.

I'm finding it disturbing not to get the "your current target" icon as well as being unable to see health bars. Has anyone else seen this behaviour, and, even better, has anyone got a solution?
I have to amend what I previously posted -- I was using a savegame which was such that I would very soon after loading a game run into endregas in Chapter 1.

It turns out, I *am* getting targeting cursors and health bars on nekkers, but not on endregas. I don't know if the size of the model has anything to do with it, but clearly, something's not working as intended.

Anyone else?

My target icon is disappearing too. Not only with big monsters, even at Aryan LaValette's fight the icon didn't appear. It was a pain to win this fight when I didn't know if I was or not targeting him.

My GPU is Radeon 5970 with latest driver and app.

Thanks for the feedback. That's interesting ... could you try to turn on Ubersampling and see whether that brings back the target icon? (even though it may "kill" your framerate, just do it to check for the presence of the target icon?)

Also, could you post which version of the Catalyst drivers as well as the CAP you are using?

My own findings were with Catalyst Control Center (CCC) 11.6 and Catalyst Application Profiles 1 (11.6 CAP1)

Sounds like a CAP issue (you have a newer version but it is possible that it has "un-fixed" the bug):

Thank you ever so much for your feedback. In that thread, tyran37 echoes my findings: light source issue fixed, but targeting during combat is stuffed. (it still works, you just don't see the visual indication you need in order to make targeting "work for you" :-P)

I'll try and uninstall 11.6 CAP1 and try the 11.6 drivers with the 11.5 CAP5.

Again, thanks. :-) Even what I intend to try doesn't work, it's still some manner of relief to know I'm not alone in having this problem!
Hm. Allright, I now have more weirdness to report.

I tried uninstalling 11.6 CAP1 and then installing 11.5 CAP5, all using 11.6 CCC. That actually gave me the light source problem, so I reinstalled 11.6 CAP1, and that did not fix it -- I may have forgotten to uninstall 11.5 CAP5 first. I try to reboot after every step, but my rig takes a while to boot, so sometimes I lose track of where I was at ... no matter.

(In the beginning, the sort of stuff I've just written was greek to me, but I now can relate to it somewhat -- if anybody is confused by what I mean, please go ahead and ask, and I'll try to clarify!)

So, I'd now like to share the latest weirdness.

I figured something was just, on some level, deeply wrong, so I tried uninstalling both the Catalyst drivers and the Catalyst application profiles. As I now look at my Control Panel -> Programs and Features, I have neither the Catalyst drivers nor application profiles installed on my system.

So. With all that removed, I tried firing up Witcher 2, just to see what kind of slideshow I might be in for. And let me tell you, it runs just fine, and I can both see what my current target is and there's no light source issues.

But ... how can that be? How can the game not only run without any drivers, but run better than I ever managed to get it to run when I had the latest and greatest drivers + profiles installed?

That is a damn fine question. I'm half way tempted to try it myself. I'm not having any issues, but I'd be curious to see what happens. Running 10.10 drivers on a 5770.
Another update: I've not been able to make heads or tails of anything, but I've re-installed CCC 11.6 and CAP1 11.6 (yeah, the version numbering is kind of messy, blame ATI/AMD).

No light source bleeding issues, but unless I enable Ubersampling, targetting doesn't work on endregas and, presumably, other "large" foes. I don't know how to fix this.

At least I have tolerable performances and no lighting woes. It's not perfect, but for now, it's playable.

Hm. You can probably try editing User.ini under My Documents > Witcher 2 > Config

Change this line: "UberSampling=2" to "UberSampling=1"

I'm not sure if this works but no harm giving it a try?
Single HD4850. Targetting doesn't work on most foes since chapter 2, unless I enable Ubersampling. Tried a lot of different stuff to no avail... I think it's a driver issue, but i dunno. Plus, Usampling = 1 doesn't solve it.

I'll downgrade the driver I guess, and post the results.

Apparently either a game or driver issue.

Reverted back to 11.5 + 11.6 CAP2... Success, back to normal... Driver issue, try it.

However, 11.5 give me a bit of a worse performance, especially in the stuttering department, which is s***, still... it works. *Sigh* must wait for a new driver i guess.

(dual Radeon HD 6970s in Crossfire)

I'm still on 11.6 driver and I've got 11.6 CAP2. Nothing changed. Nice performance, absence of light orbs, but I can't target endregas and similar sized creatures. Humans, drowners and nekkers are okay. The only way to fix this is to turn on Ubersampling (by which I mean, to set it to 2 -- I tried hand-editing the User.ini file and changed it to 1, but it didn't change anything.)

So, it's absolutely playable, if you can get over not seeing which endrega (or similar) you've got targeted. But you kind of get used to seeing what's target when fighting other things, so ... yeah, it definitely doesn't feel very polished.

Problem is, monsters get generally bigger later on in the game... Plus, if if you unlock features which make use of the targetting reticle (Riposte, etc.) they're pretty much unusable.
11.5 still gives me nice frames (maybe just an unnoticeable bit less in certain areas), and the game is almost maxed out with AA, SSAO, and Cinematic DoF... But the thing is, I managed to get rid of almost all the micro-stuttering in 11.6.

With 11.5 it has returned, it's only in a some areas but it's noticeable enough. The game however, is pretty playable, and i can't complain especially since it runs fine with a big ammount of eye candy on my outdated system.
