Geralt of Rivia, also known as the famous White Wolf, gained his name, because his hair turned instantly white as a freak effect of his Trial of the Grasses, the last step in becoming a witcher. He was but a boy back then.

Now it seems, there was another freak accident that turned Geralt's hair grey. I didn't agree with that. And so I knew I'd get to work to change that as soon as I'd have the game on my computer.

http://www.witchernexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2

There are two files, geralt_c1.xbm, that's the hair, and geralt h1.xbm, that is the optional matching face.

Go to your The Witcher 2\CookedPC directory and unzip the contents there. The final file structure should look like this: The Witcher 2\CookedPC\characters\player\model\head. If you don't want the optional file, just delete it.

And this time I actually have screenshots for you. :)

AudreyWinter: There's one side effect though: when running TexMod, you cannot run Fraps at the same time, they both read the same file.
Nooooooooooo. But, how will I take my lovely screenshots! :p

Would you happen to have a screenshot of the hair?

Well, that's exactly the problem: CDPR "forgot" to implement the screenshot feature (hopefully they will hand that in later, in the 3rd or 4th patch from now...). That is why I promise to redo the mod, as soon as we know how to extract the textures and override them. :)
Mhh, theres a better way to do this.

Apparently theres a tool that converts the xbm files (like in characters\player\model\head ) to tga, you can edit them, and convert them back to xbm so that the game loads them like it does with the xml mods.

If you understand as much cyrillic as me, you can download it here http://filesmelt.com/dl/witcher2_texture_converter.zip - how to use it check the post in the xentax forums.

Sadly, texmod causes a massive performance hit for me ;/

If you want i could explain how to convert xbm to dds (optionally to) tga and back to xbm.

Luckily I am not trying to sleep with Geralt, so I can overlook his ugliness. ;p
I seem to be the only one that finds him attractive.

Well, I have to say, that...grin? of his, is all sorts of creepy and weird. :p Any woman that was approached by a man with that grin would either fall over laughing or wonder if she needs to get the pepper spray out. ;)

And, ugly is probably too strong of a word. I guess I was just saying he's not particularly attractive, but then again, he's not supposed to be, so it's not like I'm let down that he's not some chiseled adonis. ;p
One simple question, how to install this mod,can someone explain please ?

Uh... I can't put the files in the zip with anything in the posting of the guy... like "put quickbms.exe with unpacked files." There's no quickbms.exe and where would I get unpacked files and where is characters\player\model\head? Sorry for extreme blindness, but I searched all folders and couldn't find anything, where are xbm files suppossed to be?

Performance hit with TexMod? With ONE file? That's the first time I heard that - are you playing on an amiga? ;)
If you want i could explain how to convert xbm to dds (optionally to) tga and back to xbm.
Well, you'd have to tell me first where to find the files. :/
And if I don't NEED to use dds format, I am more than happy, because I don't use photoshop (only open and save the files, but don't edit them with ps).

Edit: I found your tutorial and I'll try and figure it out from there.

There's a readme included with TexMod.
But it seems I will be doing another version of the mod - after I learned how to. ;)

The readme is included with TexMod, which I only linked, but not included, since it is not my own work. Link again: http://www.tombraiderhub.com/tr7/modding/index.html. Not a direct link, but the file you want is on the right side of the screen.

For some reason when i have texmod active and have it attach to tw2 my performance slows to a crawl, without any packages even.Weirdness, maybe driver or gpu setting issue.

Anyhow i actually tried modding the hairs too (although to black) so i know where they are (for a change ;p) Sorry for assuming all this knowledge, i will explain properly ;)

1) The game files are compressed in the pack0.dzip - so first you have to unpack it
see here -> http://www.gog.com/en/forum/the_witcher_2/how_to_unpack_the_pack0_dzip_for_modders - make sure you extract it somewhere, where somewhere is not inside tw2 directory.

2) Get the zip file http://filesmelt.com/dl/witcher2_texture_converter.zip , and get rid of the bat files inside (they don't work for me at all). Copy the entire contents in the same directory where you have quickbms (which you will have once you follow the how to unpack the pack0 file)

3) see attachment how your folder should look ;p

Now its really simple browse your extracted files (wherever you extracted pack0.dzip to) and find characters\player\model\head

inside you find
geralt__c1.xbm (Color)
geralt__c1_n.xbm (Normals)
geralt__c1_s.xbm (Specular)

Now start quickbms.exe - point it to the w2_xbm2dds.bms then in the 2nd dialog - point it to geralt__c1.xbm . It extracts the file (you can also shift select more xbm files)

Now you have a geralt__c1_DXT1.dds and bin , drag the dds file simply on nvdecompress.exe to get a tga, edit the tga, save it, and drag it on nvcompress to get a dds again.

Now rename (your modified) geralt__c1_DXT1.dds to geralt__c1.dds (so , just drop the DXT1 its something the unpack script does)

Now the last step is simply to run quickbms.exe again, but this time point it to w2_dds2xbm.bms - select your "new" geralt__c1.dds file and you get, tada, an xbm file that the game should read if you put it in the right place. (make sure you don't "lose" the bin file Note And don't forget to remove the dxt1 part from the bin file as well!, its required for the final step ,p)

So basically, to "properly" recreate the xmb file make sure do this and have these 2 files
rename geralt__c1_DXT1.dds to geralt__c1.dds
rename geralt__c1_DXT1.bin to geralt__c1.bin
then just select the DDS file when you are using quickbms (it will auto-read the bin file)

The right place for that particular file would be here
The Witcher 2\CookedPC\characters\player\model\head

Thank you!
Now you were faster than me, I just had found your tutorial and was reading it. ;)
But NOW I need a little after dinner workout slaying some nekkers first, because head is full of cheese right now. Then I'll try and redo the mod.

One thing: since the file already tells me, that the file is saved in DXT1, do I really need the converting step? Can't I just edit the dds and save it again?

Yes you can do that, in fact its only in there because you need an extra plugin to open dds files in photoshop and its a hassle.

Actually though, i am not entirely sure if just dragging the tga file on nvconvert actually makes a dxt1 file again. So editing the dds file and saving it properly might be the better idea. I am gonna test this now ;p

Thinking about it more, its probably best if you edit the dds files directly and skip the tga step. ^^
