I just gained a level(7 I think) and noticed the block/parry function is not acting as it did in the past. I used to hold the E key down to parry and could still attack (LMB or RMB) while holding parry down. This no longer seems to work. I have to release the E key to attack now.

Is there something in the combat mechanics I am missing? I went back to an old save and it still worked as I remembered it.

Something else I just noticed....

I first noticed this problem while doing the Troll Trouble quest. While running down Dmitri at the graveyard the hold parry and attack seemed to start working again for a minute. After I reloaded the save it had quit working again.

Also during the encounter with Dmitri I try pressing Q to cast Quen and instead of casting Quen it has Geralt draw his sword. Repeatably.

Combat control seems to have become wonky at best. I am seriously trying to figure out this combat system, but even Gothic 3 with it's stunlock problems and so forth was never this problematic. It wouldn't be so bad if it was least consistent, but the control behavior just seems to have a mind of it 's own and I can't tell the bugs from the prescribed behavior.
Join the club. Although I haven't had controls actually get mixed up nor have I had issues with blocking. The other stuff you are experiencing is a symptom of all the delay bugs, which are themselves triggered by different events. So they aren't consistent.

Sticking with the radial menu is the safest way to go, regrettably.

Ok here is the answer:

--- The block and attacks works like this: if you want the block to workout you need to be in COMBAT, and targeted someone, if you have not Tageted anyone, then the attack whenever your blocking will mostlilky not work. -- a great method is: if you want to attack just after your block, you need to let them hit you then the moment their sword clashes with you need to press attack which will act as a comback and attack the enemy.

--- About the quen sign, you must know that to cast ANY sign, and i mean ANY sign, geralt must be in combat position, means that you HAVE to draw your sword when ever you want to cast a sign, hence most of the time when i just want to draw my sword and not cast signs, i press Q. -- so to summerise, if you want to cast a sign while not in combat position you have to press Q two (2) times. once to draw your sword, and once to cast the sign.

If it helped Don't forget to mark this as the answer. Thanks.
Any more questions I will gladly answer.

Hey, just to let you know. You can only cast signs when your weapon is drawn. So the first time you press Q you will draw your weapon (if it's not drawn). When your weapon is drawn, pressing Q will cast the sign. Hope this helps.

Btw, without Riposte I'm not sure about LMB when holding down E. Usually after I block, I let go of E then I press LMB. However if I have the Riposte skill, while holding E sometimes the counter-attack cursor (looks like a lightning bolt) flashes, and pressing LMB will cause me to counter-attack.

Thanks! That explains the Q functionality.

The bug with the parry attack is still baffling me. I am definitely in Combat when it is happening.
The first time was with Endrenga's so it was hard to tell if they were swinging at me....but the next time was with Dmitri and his gang and they were definitely pummeling me. I had to let go of the E to take a swing and up to this point in the game I always held the E down while attacking.
I'm not sure if its intentional or a bug but it makes sense to me that block doesn't work when swinging. It would be way too overpowered and there would be no reason not to have block pressed at almost all times

But it seems that this is the way it works for most people...I started doing it after reading a combat tips posts by several others ...and up until now it has worked.

Try it and see!

Well it works for me. You mean when you can't attack when you're holding down E? Try testing it without any enemy.

Without an enemy you definitely can't attack while blocking. But in combat while targeted you should be able to attack while holding E down.

Sorry, what I mean is I can swing my sword even while holding E down, and yes I can also attack when I'm holding E down.
well since there is only one question left, here is the probable answer, as i said before Blocking with no enemies on sight will not work, but if there is an enemy targeted it will work. try holding "Alt" when an enemy is sighted to focus solely on him, and then attack while blocked. this should work.

Now if you are saying that at level 6 you could do that, but at level 7 you cant, that is another issue, and its a bug which doesnt have a probably solution. try finding a level 4 or 5 savegame and see if it works the way you wanted it to work, if not then what you say prbably is not possible.

Hope this is the solution, if not let me know, I really want to SOLVE this question. all the questions ive solved so far werent posted as questions so i never got to be selected, i guess this is my chance.

Yes, I used Alt to explicitly target an opponent and I could not attack while holding down the E key. It is not a matter of level. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't....even when loading the same save file. I am beginning to think it is a weird driver problem with my wireless mouse keyboard (logitech) but I am just guessing. When the problem occurrs I simply exit the game and restart everything and it will start working again.

On as side note...thank you for your help. I am not sure what you mean by selected or why it is a big deal to you, but I do appreciate any and all help!

He means getting his post "marked as solution". Btw does holding block + attacking work if you are not using LMB?

No ....neither LMB or RMB work when the problem occurs.
