Wanted to share this fix in case anyone ran into it...

I've been banging my head for a half an hour with a problem where the game starts fine but as soon as you reach the dungeon the video is black with only the mouse cursor, subtitles, text, menus, and automap are visible. The game is running, sound and all but there is no 3D image.

If you're a software developer like me you may have the DirectX SDK installed. If so you need to make sure you set the Direct3D runtime back to "Retail". I had mine still set on debug from my earlier software development work and forgot to change back. Ths runtime setting is in the DirectX control panel accessable from the Start Menu -> Microsft DirectX SDK (XXXX)-> DirectX Utilities -> DirectX Control Panel. On the Direct3D 9 tab be sure the radio button for "Use Retail Version of Direct3D 9" is selected. This made all my problems go away.

You do not want to play games using the Debug runtime as it decreases performance and can cause some games to crash.
I LOVE YOU!

Praise the lord Jesus for your post which finally allows me to play this game!

Hey, I've done all that, but then again my game crashes right after the intro cinematic. Any clue, you seem to be the only person I've come across that might have any idea of what they're doing. I'm not terribly computer savvy, so if you have any clue what might be wrong, dumbing it down for me would be totally awesome. The issue I have is that the game used to run fine, then I didn't play it for a while, and now post latest patch, it black screens right after the intro cinematic.

Odd coincidence I just happened to logon today for the first time in many months and saw this. Unfortunately the only thing I can suggest first get the latest version of the game. You did get the EE version and patched to 1.35? There are a number of video related fixes the latest patch. Instructions are on CDP's website in Support -> Witcher 2.

If that fails then the only thing remaining is to try changing your video drivers to a newer or prior version which is what other people claim sometimes works for them with some games. If you have an Nvidia card you may want try uninstalling the 3D Vision driver, some have report issues with that, however its unlikely as CDP and Nividia have fixed most of 3D vision issues in the latest updates.

If all else fails did you try contacting CDP support?
