I only have roughly 15 gigs left on my hard drive and I felt that I could spare the 8gb the requirements listed. Once I finished downloading and saw the 14.5 I needed I couldn't believe it, there is no way I can install this game now unless it compresses or something in the final stages of installation. I spent a fair amount of time cleaning out my hard drive recently so theres nothing I can do. Am I stuck with a game I can't play or is there something I'm missing here?

That's because the game installs all language options by default. Unfortunately, you cannot pick the preferred VO during installation, you can however delete unneeded files later. (Full install takes 13.3 GB)

So Regardless the final file size is going to be 5 gigs over what was said on this site? That's really disappointing. Thanks for that information though.

Without deleting the files - yes. After installing you can net ~4.5 GB of free space, if you leave only English version. They really should fix it, either by modifying the installer or changing gamecard info. But I guess they have their hands full of other issues at the moment.

I guess I'm just going to have to hold off playing this game for quite a while then, I don't see myself fixing my space issue anytime soon. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to finally playing this.

Just delete the files. It's silly to put off a game for "space issues" when you could fix said "space issues" easily.

Not easy at all. I've deleted everything I can and even after I delete some of the audio files I'd still have way less space than I anticipated which really hurts my ability to do other things on my computer (such as capturing/editing video). Heh, I need to get an external eventually.

If you're serious about editing videos you would have at least two TBs of HDD space.

And if you delete all the other language stuff, it is 8GBs.

Seeing as I dedicate roughly 50% of my hard drive space to it, I'd say yes I'm rather serious about the whole thing, but I can't exactly afford to have a lot of space. My hard drive is only 120 gigs, I've made due with what I have for the past few years. Also earlier in the topic a post said I'd be down to 13.3 gigs not 8 so heh.
The game card on GOG is definitely wrong. On my retail version of the game, the original install was about 8.5GB, but Enhanced Edition (and previous patches) added an additional 8+ GB of data, though I may have left some of the additional languages in. Even without the languages, there is no way the game from GOG will ever get down to the advertised 8.5GB.

To clarify: I said the full version, straight after installation, is 13.3GB. From that you can safely delete ~4.5 GB.

mind telling me where I can find these 4.5 gigs? I've been searching around the files but, I see nothing I can delete.

Actually, I found some 500+ Mb language files but, I have no clue which ones to delete.

sua222: [...]
In The Witcher/Data folder you can find following files:

voices_XX_00.bif
lang_XX.key
M1_XX.key
M2_XX.key
dialog_XX.tlk

Where XX corresponds to the language version
(English = 3)

Run the game once, set the preferred VO and subtitles and after that, you can safely delete files containing other languages.
