You'll hear various opinions. I remember loving the books when I was in high school.

The two short story collections are funny and quite amusing. I would liken them to chapters 1 and 4 of W1. Geralt goes around cities and villages, and solves problems of others while creating problems for himself.

The Saga is a bit different and Ciri is as much a main character as Geralt. But the story is more like the larger plot of the games.

Now, the problem is with the translations. Only two books were translated to English, officially. And there may be some stuff lost in translation. You should read the free short story added to W1 and see what you think for yourself.

There are some fan translations on the regular (i.e., non-GOG) Witcher forum of the books that don't have official English translations, and those translations are surprisingly good. So even though only two books have been officially translated, you can read the whole series. You have to promise to buy real copies of the ones you read in fan translation if they ever get official versions, though. ;)
