Are there any enemies in the game that are able to kill you or is it all scripted and you will always escape?

Well, to avoid too many spoilers, there's one "enemy" that can move around the map and even follow heat. It's slow, easy to avoid and restricted to only a few small areas. You can't destroy it, though. Most of the danger in the game comes from the environment/weather and traps. You might notice some creatures from time to time, but those are scripted events and they don't chase you.

So no enemies in the traditional sense and no killing.

It's instant death if it catches up to you.
