Go to the folder consistent of the Game . GOG Games/The Settlers>
Right click EXE. file or program file.
Properties>
Compatibility

And choose Win XP (service pack 2)
Save

(You probably want to do this for all the start up files)

You also need to decrease screen resolution to somewere between 800x600 to 1280x1024
dependent of what your game currently is set at. if you havent played it yet it is most likely is set at 600 . ¨

There are several guides around to guide you how to change it outside of the game if wanted .

I've read someone have managed to play it in 1080x ,but i haven't quite figured out yet, it seems i need a patch for it.

Tried all screen resolutions, didn't work. Thanks though. I changed the compatibility for 2 exes, are there more maybe ?
I am using Windows 10 + NVIDIA Card (GTX 980) and the only way to really get it to work was using DxWnd. There are 3 Settings you have to activate:

- Main-Tab => Run in Windowed
- DirectX-Tab 1 => switch VIDEO to SYSTEM on fail ... Software rendering.
- DirectX-Tab 2 => Force HEL (last entry).

Game runs fine in window mode. To Bad "Keep Aspect ratio" does not work. This way one could simply use a FULL HD resolution and play the game in full screen anyway without the graphics getting stretched.

Used the latest GOG Version without any mods or patches. NO Compatibility mode.

Tip: Use "Fast 2X Bilinear" or "Full Bilinear filtering" to get a "smoother" image (DirectX-Tab 1)

Edit:
Problem is, that with modern NVIDIA cards (at least, donno about AMD) it's impossible to start settler IV. DxWnd switches to software rendering, which works just fine for me :)

After trying all the Steps in your Post, i spent a bit time in the DXWnd and found a Way to get the Game to run as it should. With Videos working, Fullscreen.

Try the following Steps in the DXWnd:

Main:
- Generic
Run in Wondow
Acquire Admin caps
-Position
Desktop (This is the Part that gets the Game to Fullscreen)

With these options your game should run on Fullscreen just as you remembered when you left it several years ago.

I Have no Idea how DXwnd works and i am generally a newbie when it comes to the Tech-Part but it works for me, maybe it works fpr you Guys aswell. Cheers :)

Thanks! I also used Hide Desktop background :)

DxWnd uses hooks to put itself between each of the DLLs loaded. Settler says to Windows I want 800x600 Fullscreen pls. DxWnd "hooks" into it, receives the call, and creates a normal window, ignoring specific stuff. But beware, some of the settings can lead to you anti virus tool to find a false positive (my Settler 3 exe got deleted, after playing around with DxWnd) ... Keyboard Hooks and Mouse Hooks often lead to such behavior, since trojans normally make great use of these hooking techniques.

Tried all of that DxWnd stuff on an AMD card, always having black boxes jump in over the screen for a moment. Any clues what to set? DXGL would run the game fine, but only in a window (windowed fullscreen doesn't work). With DxWnd windowed fullscreen works, but there are flickering black boxes over the screen every few seconds.

EDIT: The black boxes are whenever on the desktop something upgrades in the background. Closing all other windows (or hiding them with Win+D) before starting the game works almost fine (only flickering in the bottom right where the systray is) as long as nothing pops up. So that might be some AERO bug, even though the AERO Fix is activated in DxWnd by default...

EDIT2: Found a solution. Use GDI mode instead of Primary Surface (on DirectX -> Emulation) to prevent windows that refresh in the background from creating black boxes flickering!

I've found another alternative to DXGL and DXWnd. The latest version of dgVoodoo 2 works flawlessly for me on my AMD dual-graphics laptop and Nvidia desktop (both Windows 10). Google for `dgvoodoo2` - I can't post links at the moment.

It's best to read the included readmes, but for the impatient installation in brief is:

1) download `dgVoodoo2_53.zip` and unpack the contents of the `MS` directory into `C:\GOG Games\The Settlers IV GOLD\Exe`
2) if you are not running Windows 10, download `D3DCompiler_47.zip` and unpack `D3DCompiler_47.dll` into `C:\GOG Games\The Settlers IV GOLD\Exe`
3) Run Settlers IV as normal. IMPORTANT: do not use compatibility mode, running as Administrator, etc.

Hope this helps.

Ey KingstonBlack, I've tried to unpack the contents from dgVoodoo2_53.zip and it fixed the lagg in the menu's. But I have a problem with opening the runfile. I can't open it without running as Administrator. I've unchecked the box in the compatibility window and even in the settings for all users. But it still runs as Administrator and I've no idea how to change this.

I've changed the settings from the S4.exe as well for the S4_main.exe. Since I can't make that to work I'm also not able to work with the DxWnd since that won't work unless it doesn't run as Administrator.

Also does the dgVoodoo2_53 method work with the GOLD edition? When I put the MS directory into the Exe folder it says I need the CD to play it.

-Picksoul
In my experience dgVoodoo 2 works well with any version of Settlers IV - I have the original and all the expansions on CD plus the GOG GOLD edition. I also use it to make Cultures 2, Northland and 8th Wonder of the World run more smoothly. I've never seen it cause the original CD to be requested.

I don't know what to suggest for the other problem - it's not one that I've encountered.
Alright So I finally got the game to work. I have played through a bit and decided to do the first Trojan mission. I finish everything and it should end but it doesn't. I tried updating the game using an "official patch" but when I try starting the game it tells me to but in the disk. I'm using the GoG version so sadly I don't have a disk. Any Help?
I've been able to get the game working using DXGL but when I'm in game, Clicking the left or mouse button registers that my mouse is far off to the right instantly. This makes it impossible to place houses or select troops, What do?

Works like a charm, thank you SO MUCH !!!
Is there any place where one can get the "lost trojan" track in decent quality?
The linked one to mega is really bad quality.

I can't believe it, that Voodo GL works!

What track exactly is the lost one? I have the German Retail Gold version and might be able to help out (that is, if GOG officials agree after asking BlueByte).

Also, the "New World" campaign on the German version is not on GOG. Or if it is, at least not in the English GOG version. Sadly the German version doesn't have the maps easily accessible [there is no Campaign folder], so there is no way to upload them easily (even if GOG would agree).

EDIT: How do I turn off the Voodoo watermark?
