So, this is the very first game I bought here on GOG, I'm enjoying it pretty much. Even if it runs in slow motion due to my awful hardware.

Since I'm used to this kind of performance when I game, this isn't much of a problem to me.
What is a problem is that I tend to stumble upon some NPCs that run up to me and appear to give me a letter, perhaps they're about new side quests, considering what I hear when I try to open them.

That's when the problem starts to occour.
If I even dare to press ESC after interacting with those NPCs, the entire game crashes so badly that I'm forced to restart my entire laptop, since even the task manager can't help.

Like... Is there any sort of solution for this?
Experiencing this stuff makes me worry that I lose all my progress in the game, because I didn't save for a long time.

Sorry for the late reply. When I played the game I never had this problem when the Npc delivered me the message so I assume that probably it must be your hardware. If you are worried about your save data I don't think that you can lose it. Usually save data gets deleted only when a game crashes at the time you save your game. What you could do is lower some settings and hope for the best.
a program known as large address aware will fix this

in 2009 there were a lot of 32 bit windows which only support 3Gigs of ram
when you get a note the world changes a lot of ram and Hard Drive swaps
