Because I have yet worked out how to update GoG versions of the games, I thought it prudent to mention that v2 of these games exist. They are the output of the SDK rewrite that I needed to perform and have been available for about 3 years now. I've not announced them much before because they were still being tweaked for said SDK switch.

Doomdark's Revenge is particularly interesting as it has fixed many algorithm problems from v1 which stopped it being fully aligned to the original. This is really as a result of the time taken to develop the DDR port compared to LOM and more honestly, my less in-depth knowledge of the ins and outs of the game in comparison.

There are a number of new features such as difficulty modes and game options that allow you vary how you play the games.

I do hope to get these on GoG soon, but the process is far more complicated than it was for me 12 years ago. Until then you can try them out from the support pages.
There is also the website for information and updates blog

Sounds like Doomdark's Revenge is worth another playthrough.
I've been playing the latest (2.0.8.50) version of DR, and it seems to work quite well now.

Using the Impassable Mountains optional rules, the computer controlled lords get stuck when trying to move, instead of moving around the obstacle, so that option is currently useless. It does not affect Dwarves, and I presume also the Giants.

The auto-map is almost perfect, but I would have liked it to note the effects from visiting sites like Stones, Temples and so forth.

Unlike LoM (where your lords only do 1/4 the damage compared to the original Speccy version), the battle calculations seem correct. But it's quite maddening that in a Strategy game you can't really initiate combat against computer controlled lords, since they can just move away, while the player doesn't have that option if attacked. I wish this could have been an optional rule at least.
